In the Records

In the 24th year of Jian'an (219) Guan Yu attacked Cao Ren at Fancheng; when the autumn rains made the Han River overflow and Yu Jin's seven armies were submerged, Yu Jin surrendered and Guan Yu beheaded Pang De. Following the advice of Sima Yi and Jiang Ji, Cao Cao had Sun Quan strike at Guan Yu's rear. Mi Fang at Jiangling and Shi Ren at Gong'an sent men to welcome Sun Quan, and when Xu Huang came to relieve Cao Ren, Guan Yu could not prevail and withdrew. Sun Quan occupied Jiangling and captured all the wives and children of the soldiers, and Guan Yu's army scattered. Records, Shu 6 §10–12

According to the Biography of the Lord of Wu, in the intercalary month Sun Quan marched against Guan Yu and first sent Lü Meng to take Gong'an by surprise, and the Administrator of Nan Commandery, Mi Fang, surrendered his city. Guan Yu returned to Dangyang and held Maicheng to the west. When Sun Quan sent men to induce him to submit, Guan Yu feigned surrender, set up banners and dummies on the city walls and fled, but his soldiers all scattered and only some ten horsemen remained. Records, Wu 2 §27–28

Sun Quan had already sent Zhu Ran and Pan Zhang to cut off his route. Pan Zhang went with Zhu Ran to Linju to cut off the road by which Guan Yu was fleeing and camped at Jiashi. The Biography of Guan Yu records that Sun Quan sent generals to intercept Guan Yu and beheaded Guan Yu and his son Guan Ping at Linju. Records, Wu 2 §28Records, Wu 10 §92Records, Shu 6 §12
