Profile

Zeng Xuan was a general defending the city of Shouchun who appeared in Chapter 112 of the Romance. Zhuge Dan, who had joined forces with the Wu army, was badly defeated by Sima Zhao, withdrew into Shouchun, shut the gates and held fast; when the hearts of those in the city wavered, Sima Zhao had the city attacked from all sides at once, and at that point Zeng Xuan surrendered the north gate and let the Wei army into the city. Romance, Ch. 112 §1–3 · 14–15

Learning that the Wei troops were already inside, Zhuge Dan led several hundred of his men out by a small road within the city, but at the drawbridge he was cut down by Hu Fen. This is the only place in the Romance where Zeng Xuan's name appears. Romance, Ch. 112 §15

He appears in only one of the Romance's 120 chapters, Chapter 112, and he is not named in any chapter title. The Biography of Zhuge Dan in Chen Shou's main text records only that the General-in-Chief personally came to the siege, advanced troops on all sides, and that when they beat their drums and scaled the walls all at once no one in the city dared to move; it names no general who surrendered a gate, and Zeng Xuan's name appears neither in Chen Shou's main text nor in Pei Songzhi's commentary. In the Romance

In Chapter 112 of the Romance, when Sima Zhao heard that Zhuge Dan had joined forces with the Wu army and was coming to fight a decisive battle, he followed Zhong Hui's advice that, since the Wu troops were helping for the sake of gain, they should be lured with gain, and had rewards for the troops along with oxen, horses, donkeys and mules gathered on all sides of his position. When Zhuge Dan, with the Wu generals Zhu Yi and Wen Qin on his left and right, drove straight ahead, the southern troops scrambled to seize the oxen and horses that filled the fields and had no heart for fighting; then the ambushing forces of Shi Bao and Zhou Tai (州泰) and the elite troops of Wang Ji (王基) and Chen Qian fell upon them, and Zhuge Dan was badly defeated. Zhuge Dan led his defeated troops into Shouchun, shut the gates and held fast. Romance, Ch. 112 §1–3

Following Zhong Hui's advice to leave the main road at the south gate open, Sima Zhao had Wang Ji withdraw the troops from the south gate, and the Wu general Yu Quan, together with Quan Yi (全懌), Quan Duan, Wen Qin and others, led 10,000 troops into the city through the south gate. Outside, Zhu Yi was defeated by Wang Ji and Chen Qian and beheaded by Sun Chen, who returned to Jianye; and Quan Yi, receiving a letter from Quan Duan's son Quan Yi (全禕), who had surrendered to Wei, opened the gates and came out with Quan Duan and several thousand men to surrender. The advisers Jiang Ban and Jiao Yi, rebuked for urging a decisive battle, also went over the walls and surrendered, and from autumn into winter no heavy rains fell, so the Huai River did not flood. Romance, Ch. 112 §4–11

When the grain in the city ran out, Wen Qin proposed sending all the northern troops out of the city and was beheaded by Zhuge Dan, and his sons Wen Yang and Wen Hu leapt down from the wall and went to the Wei camp to surrender. Following Zhong Hui's remonstrance, Sima Zhao made the two Lieutenant Generals and enfeoffed them as Marquises Within the Passes, and when the two rode around the city calling on the defenders to surrender quickly, everyone in the city wanted to surrender. Hearing this, Zhuge Dan patrolled the walls himself day and night and upheld his authority by killing. Romance, Ch. 112 §12–14

When Zhong Hui said that the hearts of those in the city had already changed and that this was the moment to attack, Sima Zhao, greatly pleased, spurred on his three armies to attack from all sides at once. At this point Zeng Xuan, a general defending the city, surrendered the north gate and let the Wei troops into the city. Zhuge Dan broke out by a small road with several hundred of his men but was cut down by Hu Fen at the drawbridge, and at the west gate Yu Quan refused to surrender and died fighting. Entering Shouchun, Sima Zhao exterminated Zhuge Dan's three sets of kin, and the several hundred of Zhuge Dan's men who had been captured, saying they wished to die together with Lord Zhuge, were all put to death without a single one of them surrendering. Romance, Ch. 112 §15–16 · 18–19
