Profile

Jiang Ban was a general under Zhuge Dan of Wei. In the 2nd month of the 2nd year of Wufeng (255), as a subordinate general of Zhuge Dan, he defeated Liu Zan, General of the Left of Wu, at Gupi, and Liu Zan died in this battle. Records, Wu 3 §9–10Records, Wei 28 §33

In the 2nd year of Ganlu (257), when Zhuge Dan rebelled at Shouchun and was surrounded by the General-in-Chief Sima Zhao, Jiang Ban, together with Jiao Yi, abandoned Zhuge Dan, climbed over the city wall and went over to the General-in-Chief. Chen Shou's main text records nothing of him after that. Records, Wei 28 §35 · 37–38

He has no biography of his own in the Records; he appears three times in all, in the Biography of Zhuge Dan in the Records of Wei and the Biographies of the Three Successor Rulers in the Records of Wu. In the Romance he appears only in Chapter 112, as an adviser to Zhuge Dan, and thus in 1 of the 120 chapters; there is no chapter whose title contains his name. After urging a decisive battle and being rebuked by Zhuge Dan, he climbs over the wall with Jiao Yi and surrenders to Wei. Records, Wei 28 §33 · 38Records, Wu 3 §10Romance, Ch. 112 §10–11

In the Records

Because Zhuge Dan had long been in Huainan, the court again made him Grand General Who Guards the East with honors equal to the Three Excellencies and had him direct the military affairs of Yang Province. The Wu grand generals Sun Jun, Lü Ju, Liu Zan and others, hearing of the disorder in Huainan, and with Wen Qin just then coming over to them, took him along and came straight to Shouchun. But since Zhuge Dan's armies had already arrived and the city could not be attacked, they withdrew. Zhuge Dan sent the general Jiang Ban to pursue and attack them; he beheaded Liu Zan, sent his head to the capital, and took his seal and tally. Zhuge Dan was advanced in enfeoffment to Marquis of Gaoping and transferred to Grand General Who Conquers the East. Records, Wei 28 §33

The Biographies of the Three Successor Rulers in the Records of Wu record this event under the 2nd year of Wufeng (255). In the intercalary month of that year Sun Jun, together with Lü Ju, General of Agile Cavalry, and Liu Zan, General of the Left, set out to make a surprise attack on Shouchun, but when Zhuge Dan of Wei entered Shouchun he led his troops back. In the 2nd month Liu Zan was defeated at Gupi by Jiang Ban, a subordinate general of Zhuge Dan, and Liu Zan and the generals Sun Leng, Jiang Xiu and others were all killed. Records, Wu 3 §9–10

In the 5th month of the 2nd year of Ganlu (257), when Zhuge Dan was summoned to become Minister of Works, he grew all the more afraid and finally rebelled, closing the city gates and holding Shouchun. In the 6th month the General-in-Chief Sima Zhao, commanding 260,000 troops of the central and provincial armies, came to the Huai River to attack him and surrounded Shouchun in a double ring, inside and out. Records, Wei 28 §35 · 37

The Wu general Zhu Yi twice came with a large army to meet Zhuge Dan and the others, but Zhou Tai (州泰) and others broke his vanguard every time, and Sun Chen, angry that Zhu Yi fought without advancing, put him to death. The food in the city dwindled, no relief came from outside, and the host had nothing to rely on. The generals Jiang Ban and Jiao Yi, both trusted confidants of Zhuge Dan who took part in planning his affairs, abandoned Zhuge Dan, climbed over the city wall and went over to the General-in-Chief of their own accord. The General-in-Chief then used a stratagem of sowing discord to win over Quan Yi (全懌) and the others, and when Quan Yi and the others opened the city gate and came out leading several thousand men, the city was struck with fear and did not know what to do. Records, Wei 28 §38

In the Romance

In Chapter 112 of the Romance, when Sima Zhao surrounds Shouchun, Sun Chen beheads Zhu Yi, who has been defeated again and again, and returns to Jianye. Quan Duan's son Quan Yi (全禕) surrenders to Sima Zhao and shoots a family letter into the city, whereupon Quan Yi (全懌), together with Quan Duan, opens the city gate and comes out to surrender leading several thousand men. Romance, Ch. 112 §8–10

To the anxious Zhuge Dan, his advisers Jiang Ban and Jiao Yi urge that, since there is little grain and many soldiers in the city and it cannot be held for long, he should lead the men of Wu and Chu and fight one decisive battle to the death with the Wei army. Zhuge Dan flies into a rage, saying, 'I wish to hold out and you wish to fight; can it be that you harbor disloyal intentions?', and declares that if they say such a thing again he will certainly have them beheaded. Romance, Ch. 112 §10

The two men look up to heaven and sigh deeply, saying that Zhuge Dan will soon perish and that they had better surrender early and escape death, and that night around the second watch they climb over the wall and surrender to Wei. Sima Zhao gives them important posts, and because of this, even though there are soldiers in the city with the courage to fight, none dares to speak of fighting. Romance, Ch. 112 §10–11

Where the Romance differs

His position: In Chapter 112 of the Romance, Jiang Ban appears together with Jiao Yi as an 'adviser' to Zhuge Dan. In the Records, the Biography of Zhuge Dan calls him a 'general' and says that he and Jiao Yi were trusted confidants of Zhuge Dan who took part in planning his affairs, while the Biographies of the Three Successor Rulers call him a subordinate general of Zhuge Dan. Romance, Ch. 112 §10Records, Wei 28 §38Records, Wu 3 §10

The fight with Liu Zan: In the Records, in the 2nd year of Wufeng (255) Jiang Ban pursued the Wu army withdrawing from Shouchun and defeated and beheaded Liu Zan at Gupi. In the Romance, Jiang Ban appears only in Chapter 112, and this event is absent. Records, Wei 28 §33Records, Wu 3 §10Romance, Ch. 112 §10–11

The order of the defections: In Chapter 112 of the Romance, Quan Yi (全懌) and Quan Duan first open the city gate and surrender, and Jiang Ban and Jiao Yi then climb over the wall. In the Biography of Zhuge Dan in the Records, Jiang Ban and Jiao Yi first climbed over the city wall and went over to the General-in-Chief, after which the General-in-Chief used a stratagem of sowing discord to win over Quan Yi and the others and bring them out through the city gate. Romance, Ch. 112 §10–11Records, Wei 28 §38

Why they defected: In Chapter 112 of the Romance, after urging a decisive battle and being rebuked by Zhuge Dan for harboring disloyal intentions, they resolve to surrender. Chen Shou's main text states only that, as the food in the city dwindled and no relief came, the two men abandoned Zhuge Dan and climbed over the city wall to go over, and has neither the proposal nor the rebuke. Romance, Ch. 112 §10–11Records, Wei 28 §38

After the defection: In Chapter 112 of the Romance, Sima Zhao gives the two men important posts. Chen Shou's main text records no treatment or office that Jiang Ban received after going over. Romance, Ch. 112 §11Records, Wei 28 §38
