Xiahou Xian was the Major (sima) in Zhong Hui's Wei expedition against Shu. He has no biography of his own in the Records, and his name appears twice in the report Zhong Hui submitted around the time Jiang Wei surrendered to him in the 4th year of Jingyuan (263). Zhong Hui reported that he had sent him, together with the Army Protector Hu Lie and others, by way of Jiange out to Xindu and Dadu to cut off the path of Jiang Wei and the others as they fled. Records, Wei 28 §102–103 · 115–116
Chen Shou's main text records neither his courtesy name nor his origins, nor what he did afterward or how he died, and he does not appear in the assessment of Records of Wei 28. In the Romance his name appears only once, in Chapter 116, as one of the more than eighty senior generals gathered in Zhong Hui's tent as he sets out to attack Shu. Of the 120 chapters he appears in this one alone, and no chapter has his name in its title. Records, Wei 28 §93–136 · 140Romance, Ch. 116 §3
In the winter of the 3rd year of Jingyuan (262), as King Wen (Sima Zhao) prepared to raise a great army to take Shu, Zhong Hui was made General Who Guards the West, granted the tally of authority (jiajie) and put in command of all military affairs in Guanzhong. In the autumn of the following year an edict was issued having Deng Ai and Zhuge Xu each command more than 30,000 men: Deng Ai went to Gansong and Tazhong to pin down Jiang Wei, and Zhuge Xu went to Wujie and Qiaotou to cut off Jiang Wei's road home, while Zhong Hui, leading a host of more than 100,000, entered in separate columns by the Xie Valley and the Luo Valley. Records, Wei 28 §102–103
Zhong Hui attacked Jiange but could not take it and withdrew, while Deng Ai fought a great battle at Mianzhu and beheaded Zhuge Zhan. When Jiang Wei and the others heard that Zhuge Zhan had been defeated and led their host east into Ba, Zhong Hui advanced to Fu County and sent Hu Lie, Tian Xu, Pang Hui and others to pursue Jiang Wei. When Deng Ai advanced on Chengdu, Liu Shan surrendered to Deng Ai and sent envoys ordering Jiang Wei and the others to surrender to Zhong Hui; Jiang Wei, on reaching Qi County in Guanghan Commandery, had his soldiers lay down all their weapons, sent his tally and passes to Hu Lie, and then went by the eastern road to Zhong Hui and surrendered. Records, Wei 28 §114–115
According to the report Zhong Hui submitted, when Jiang Wei, Zhang Yi, Liao Hua, Dong Jue and the others fled to escape death and tried to make for Chengdu, Zhong Hui at once sent the Major Xiahou Xian, the Army Protector Hu Lie and others by way of Jiange out to Xindu and Dadu to cut off their path. He had the Army Adviser Yuan Jing (爰靚), General Gou An and others follow on their heels, and the Army Adviser Huangfu Kai, General Wang Mai and others go out south of Fu County to strike at their middle, while Zhong Hui himself held Fu County as a support for the forces to the east and west. Records, Wei 28 §115
Zhong Hui went on to report that, as the 40,000 or 50,000 foot and horse led by Jiang Wei and the others headed west over several hundred li, head to tail and with their carts side by side, he ordered Xiahou Xian, Huangfu Kai and others to divide their forces, seize the strategic points and spread their net wide. To the south they blocked the road of flight to Wu, to the west they stopped up the road to Chengdu, and to the north they cut off the byways of escape, so that even the footpaths were severed and there was no ground on which to flee or hide. The report continues that when Zhong Hui wrote to them in his own hand to persuade them, the host took off their armor, threw down their spears, bound their own hands behind them and gave themselves up. Records, Wei 28 §116–117
In Chen Shou's main text, Xiahou Xian's name appears only in these two sections of the report. What he did when Zhong Hui rose in revolt at Chengdu and was killed in the 1st month of the following year, and what became of him afterward, is not recorded. Records, Wei 28 §115–116 · 93–136
