Profile

Huangfu Kai accompanied Zhong Hui's Wei expedition against Shu as an Army Adviser (canjun). He has no biography of his own in the Records, and his name appears twice in the report Zhong Hui submitted around the time Jiang Wei surrendered to him in the 4th year of Jingyuan (263). Zhong Hui reported that he had sent him, together with General Wang Mai and others, out south of Fu County to strike at the middle of Jiang Wei and the others as they fled. Records, Wei 28 §103 · 115–116

In the Romance his name merely appears in Chapter 116, as one of the more than eighty senior generals assembled in the tent of Zhong Hui as he sets out to attack Shu. He appears only in this 1 of its 120 chapters, and his name is in no chapter title. Romance, Ch. 116 §3

In the Records

In the 4th year of Jingyuan (263), when Deng Ai beheaded Zhuge Zhan at Mianzhu and advanced on Chengdu, Liu Shan surrendered to Deng Ai and sent envoys ordering Jiang Wei and the others to surrender to Zhong Hui. Jiang Wei, on reaching Qi County in Guanghan Commandery, had his soldiers lay down all their weapons, sent his tally and passes to Hu Lie, and then went by the eastern road to Zhong Hui and surrendered. Records, Wei 28 §103 · 114–115

According to the report Zhong Hui submitted, when Jiang Wei, Zhang Yi, Liao Hua, Dong Jue and the others fled and tried to make for Chengdu, Zhong Hui sent the Major Xiahou Xian, the Army Protector Hu Lie and others by way of Jiange out to Xindu and Dadu to cut off their path, had the Army Adviser Yuan Jing, General Gou An and others follow on their heels, and had the Army Adviser Huangfu Kai, General Wang Mai and others go out south of Fu County to strike at their middle, while he himself held Fu County as a support for the forces to the east and west. Zhong Hui reported that, as the 40,000 or 50,000 foot and horse of Jiang Wei and the others headed west over several hundred li, he ordered Xiahou Xian, Huangfu Kai and others to divide their forces and seize the strategic points, cutting off to the south the road of flight to Wu, to the west the road to Chengdu, and to the north the byways of escape. This report is the only place in the Records where Huangfu Kai's name appears. Records, Wei 28 §115–116

In the Romance

In Chapter 116 of the Romance, when Zhong Hui has finished pitching camp, he ascends his tent and gathers all his generals to hear his orders; present, it is said, are more than eighty men, including the Army Supervisor Wei Guan, the Army Protector Hu Lie, and the senior generals Tian Xu, Pang Hui, Tian Zhang, Yuan Qing, Qiu Jian, Xiahou Xian, Wang Mai, Huangfu Kai and Gou An. When Zhong Hui seeks a vanguard who will open roads when they meet mountains and build bridges when they meet rivers, Xu Chu's son Xu Yi steps forward, and Zhong Hui gives him the central route, sending him out through the Xie Valley, and then sets off by night at the head of a host of over 100,000. Huangfu Kai's name does not appear in the Romance again after this. Romance, Ch. 116 §3–5

Where the Romance differs
