Yu Quan is a general of Wu who appears in Chapters 111 and 112 of the Romance. When Zhuge Dan of Wei rises against Sima Zhao and sends his son Zhuge Jing as a hostage to ask for relief, Sun Chen of Wu sends an army of 70,000, with Quan Yi (全懌) and Quan Duan as commanders and Yu Quan as the rear army. Romance, Ch. 111 §28 · 30–32
In Chapter 112 Yu Quan volunteers to enter by the south gate, which is not under siege, and help Zhuge Dan hold the city, and he enters the city of Shouchun with 10,000 troops. On the day the city falls, when the Wei general Wang Ji shouts at him at the west gate to surrender, he flings down his helmet, fights to the death for more than thirty bouts and dies amid the confused fighting. Romance, Ch. 112 §6 · 15–16
He appears in 2 of the Romance's 120 chapters, Chapters 111 and 112, and the title of Chapter 112 begins with 'Yu Quan Dies for Honor While Trying to Relieve Shouchun'. He does not appear in Chen Shou's main text; he is recorded only in Pei Songzhi's commentary. In Chen Shou's main text, the biography of Zhuge Dan records that Wu sent Quan Yi, Quan Duan, Tang Zi, Wang Zuo and others at the head of 30,000 men, and that Shouchun fell in the 2nd month of the 3rd year of Ganlu (258). In the Romance
In Chapter 111 of the Romance, Zhuge Dan flies into a rage at Jia Chong's probing remark that the house of the Sima, the General-in-Chief, deserves to receive the abdication of Wei's line. When Sima Zhao, having heard Jia Chong's report, summons him to court as Minister of Works, Zhuge Dan realizes that Jia Chong has informed against him and kills Yue Chen, the Inspector of Yang Province. He then submits a memorial listing all of Sima Zhao's crimes and has his Chief Clerk Wu Gang take his son Zhuge Jing to Wu as a hostage to ask for relief. Romance, Ch. 111 §26–30
At this time in Eastern Wu, the Chancellor Sun Jun has died of illness and his cousin Sun Chen is assisting in the government. Granting Wu Gang's request, Sun Chen raises an army of 70,000 with the senior generals Quan Yi (全懌) and Quan Duan as commanders, Yu Quan as the rear army, Zhu Yi and Tang Zi as the vanguard and Wen Qin as guide, and has it advance in three divisions. Sima Zhao has even the Empress Dowager and Cao Mao, the ruler of Wei, take the field, raises 260,000 troops from the two capitals and heads for Huainan, and the Wu vanguard Zhu Yi and Tang Zi are defeated one after the other by Wang Ji, the General Who Guards the South. Romance, Ch. 111 §31–36
In Chapter 112 Zhuge Dan falls into the trap Sima Zhao lays on Zhong Hui's advice, with oxen, horses, donkeys and mules spread out as bait, and is heavily defeated; he enters Shouchun, shuts the gates and holds fast. The Wu army falls back and is stationed at Anfeng, and following Zhong Hui's advice, Sima Zhao withdraws the troops from the south gate. Sun Chen summons Zhu Yi and rebukes him, asking whether he cannot even relieve the single city of Shouchun, and saying that if he fails to win again he will have him beheaded. Romance, Ch. 112 §1–5
When Zhu Yi returns to his main camp to confer, Yu Quan says that the south gate of Shouchun is now not under siege, so he will lead a body of troops in through the south gate and help Zhuge Dan hold the city. He adds that if the general challenges the Wei army to battle, he himself will strike out from inside the city so that they can attack from two directions at once. When Zhu Yi approves, Quan Yi (全懌), Quan Duan, Wen Qin and the others all wish to enter the city too, and together with Yu Quan they lead 10,000 troops into the city through the south gate. Zhu Yi, however, is attacked from behind by Wang Ji and Chen Qian, is heavily defeated and is beheaded by Sun Chen, and Sun Chen himself goes back to Jianye. Romance, Ch. 112 §6–8
Inside the city, Quan Yi (全懌) and Quan Duan receive a letter from Quan Yi (全禕), who has surrendered to Wei, and lead several thousand men out through the opened gate to surrender, and Jiang Ban and Jiao Yi also go over the wall and surrender to Wei. When the provisions run out, Zhuge Dan beheads Wen Qin, who proposes sending out the northern troops, and Wen Yang and Wen Hu leap over the wall and surrender to Wei. At last the Wei army attacks all at once from every side, and when Zeng Xuan, a general guarding the city, hands over the north gate, Zhuge Dan tries to break out along a side path with several hundred of his men and is cut down by Hu Fen beside the drawbridge. Romance, Ch. 112 §9–15
Wang Ji, storming in at the west gate, runs into the Wu general Yu Quan and shouts at him, asking why he does not surrender at once. Yu Quan, in a great rage, says that having come out under orders to rescue others in distress, to fail to rescue them and then surrender to others is something righteousness forbids, and flinging his helmet to the ground, he cries out that for a man born into this world, to die on the battlefield is good fortune. Then, swiftly wielding his sword, he fights to the death for more than thirty bouts until both man and horse are exhausted, and he is killed amid the confused fighting. The Romance quotes a poem by a later writer praising him: Eastern Wu had heroic men, but who among them was as willing as Yu Quan to give his life? Romance, Ch. 112 §16–17
