Profile

Liu Bi is an ancestor of Liu Bei whose name appears in the genealogy of the imperial clan read out by the Minister of the Imperial Clan before Emperor Xian in Chapter 20 of the Romance. The genealogy says that Liu Yi, Marquis of Qiyang, begot Liu Bi, Marquis of Yuanze, and records that the line runs from Liu Bi through Liu Da, Marquis of Yingchuan, Liu Buyi, Marquis of Fengling, Liu Hui, Marquis of Jichuan, Liu Xiong, Prefect of Fan in Dong Commandery, and Liu Hong to Liu Bei. Romance, Ch. 20 §4–6

Of the 120 chapters of the Romance he appears only in Chapter 20, and no chapter has his name in its title. Chen Shou's main text of the Biography of the First Sovereign says that Liu Bei was a descendant of Liu Sheng, Prince Jing of Zhongshan, a son of Emperor Jing of Han, and records only that Liu Sheng's son Liu Zhen was enfeoffed as Marquis of Lucheng Village in Zhuo County, lost his title and settled his family there, and that Liu Bei's grandfather was Liu Xiong and his father Liu Hong; it does not record the genealogy in between. Liu Bi appears neither in Chen Shou's main text nor in Pei Songzhi's commentary. Romance, Ch. 20 §5Records, Shu 2 §2

In the Romance

In Chapter 20 of the Romance, Cao Cao, having passed through Xu Province and led his army back to Xuchang, presents a memorial reporting Liu Bei's military merits when Emperor Xian holds court the next day, and brings him to see the emperor. When Emperor Xian summons him up into the hall and asks who his ancestors were, Liu Bei replies that he is a descendant of the Prince Jing of Zhongshan and a great-great-grandson of Emperor Xiaojing, the grandson of Liu Xiong and the son of Liu Hong. Emperor Xian has the genealogy of the imperial clan brought for examination and has the Minister of the Imperial Clan read it aloud. Romance, Ch. 20 §3–4

The genealogy begins by stating that Emperor Xiaojing begot fourteen sons and that the seventh son was Liu Sheng, Prince Jing of Zhongshan. Liu Sheng begets Liu Zhen, Marquis of Lucheng Village, and after him the line continues through Liu Ang, Marquis of Pei; Liu Lu, Marquis of Zhang; Liu Lian, Marquis of Yishui; Liu Ying, Marquis of Qinyang; Liu Jian, Marquis of Anguo; Liu Ai, Marquis of Guangling; Liu Xian, Marquis of Jiaoshui; Liu Shu, Marquis of Zuyi; and Liu Yi, Marquis of Qiyang, and Liu Yi begets Liu Bi, Marquis of Yuanze. Liu Bi begets Liu Da, Marquis of Yingchuan; Liu Da begets Liu Buyi, Marquis of Fengling; Liu Buyi begets Liu Hui, Marquis of Jichuan; Liu Hui begets Liu Xiong, Prefect of Fan in Dong Commandery; and Liu Xiong begets Liu Hong. The genealogy ends with the words that Liu Hong did not take office and that Liu Bei is the son of Liu Hong. Romance, Ch. 20 §4–6

When Emperor Xian works out the generations in the genealogy, Liu Bei turns out to be of the generation of the emperor's uncles. Greatly pleased, Emperor Xian invites him into a side hall, performs the rites between uncle and nephew, and makes him General of the Left and Marquis of Yicheng Village. From then on everyone calls Liu Bei the Imperial Uncle Liu. This passage of the genealogy is the only place in the Romance where Liu Bi's name appears. Romance, Ch. 20 §5–7
