Profile

Liu Hui is a name that appears in the clan genealogy read out before Emperor Xian by the Minister of the Imperial Clan in Chapter 20 of the Romance. According to the genealogy, he was the son of Liu Buyi, Marquis of Fengling, was himself Marquis of Jichuan, and begot Liu Xiong, Prefect of Fan in Dong Commandery. The genealogy goes on to say that Liu Xiong begot Liu Hong and that Liu Bei was the son of Liu Hong, so if the genealogy is followed, Liu Hui was Liu Bei's great-grandfather. Romance, Ch. 20 §4 · 6

He appears only in Chapter 20, 1 of the Romance's 120 chapters, and his name is in no chapter title. He appears neither in Chen Shou's main text nor in Pei Songzhi's commentary. The Biography of the First Sovereign in Chen Shou's main text only states that Liu Bei's grandfather was Liu Xiong and his father Liu Hong, and does not record the line of descent between Liu Zhen, son of Liu Sheng, Prince Jing of Zhongshan, and Liu Xiong. In the Romance

In Chapter 20 of the Romance, Cao Cao, who has had Lü Bu's wife and daughter carried to the capital Xu and returned in triumph, comes back to Xuchang, rewards those who took part in the campaign, and lodges Xuande in a residence near the Chancellor's mansion. The next day, when Emperor Xian holds court, Cao Cao submits a memorial reporting Xuande's military merits and brings him to see the emperor. Asked by the emperor who his ancestors were, Xuande replies that he is a descendant of the Prince Jing of Zhongshan and a great-great-grandson of Emperor Xiaojing, the grandson of Liu Xiong and the son of Liu Hong. Romance, Ch. 20 §3–4

The emperor has the clan genealogy brought for inspection and orders the Minister of the Imperial Clan to read it aloud. Beginning with Liu Sheng, Prince Jing of Zhongshan, the seventh son of Emperor Xiaojing, the genealogy reads down through the names and fiefs of each generation and ends: 'Liu Da begot Liu Buyi, Marquis of Fengling. Liu Buyi begot Liu Hui, Marquis of Jichuan. Liu Hui begot Liu Xiong, Prefect of Fan in Dong Commandery. Liu Xiong begot Liu Hong. Liu Hong held no office. Liu Bei is the son of Liu Hong.' In the Romance, Liu Hui's name appears only in these two phrases of the genealogy. Romance, Ch. 20 §4–6

When the generations in the genealogy are worked out, Xuande turns out to be of the generation of the emperor's uncle. Greatly pleased, the emperor invites him into a side hall and performs the rites between uncle and nephew, thinking to himself that Cao Cao wields power so that no affair of state is decided as he wishes, but that now, having gained such a heroic uncle, he will have help. The emperor makes Xuande General of the Left and Marquis of Yicheng Village, and from then on everyone calls him Imperial Uncle Liu. Romance, Ch. 20 §6–7

When Cao Cao returns to his mansion, Xun Yu and the other advisers say that since the Son of Heaven has acknowledged Liu Bei as his uncle, they fear it will bring no benefit to their lord. Cao Cao answers that since Liu Bei has been acknowledged as Imperial Uncle, he will be all the less able to refuse obedience when ordered by the Son of Heaven's edicts, and that if he is kept in the capital Xu, though in name he is close to the sovereign, in fact he is within Cao Cao's grasp. Romance, Ch. 20 §8
