Profile

Liu Buyi is a figure whose name appears in Liu Bei's genealogy, which the Minister of the Imperial Clan reads aloud in Chapter 20 of the Romance. The genealogy records him as the son of Liu Da, Marquis of Yingchuan, and the father of Liu Hui, Marquis of Jichuan, and gives his rank as Marquis of Fengling. Romance, Ch. 20 §6

He appears only in Chapter 20, 1 of the Romance's 120 chapters; his name is in no chapter title, and there is no scene in which he himself speaks or acts. The Biography of the First Sovereign in Chen Shou's main text states only that Liu Bei was a descendant of Liu Sheng, Prince Jing of Zhongshan, a son of Emperor Jing of Han, that Liu Sheng's son Liu Zhen was enfeoffed as Marquis of Lucheng Village in Zhuo County, lost his marquisate over the tribute gold for the ancestral wine offering (zhoujin) and settled his family there, and that Liu Bei's grandfather was Liu Xiong and his father Liu Hong; it does not record the line of descent in between. Liu Buyi appears neither in Chen Shou's main text nor in Pei Songzhi's commentary. Romance, Ch. 20 §6Records, Shu 2 §2

In the Romance

In Chapter 20 of the Romance, on the day after Cao Cao's army returns to Xuchang, Emperor Xian holds court, and Cao Cao submits a memorial reporting Liu Bei's military merits and brings him to see the emperor. When the emperor asks who his ancestors were, Liu Bei replies that he is a descendant of the Prince Jing of Zhongshan and a great-great-grandson of Emperor Xiaojing, the grandson of Liu Xiong and the son of Liu Hong. Romance, Ch. 20 §3–4

Emperor Xian has the genealogy of the imperial clan brought for inspection and has the Minister of the Imperial Clan read it aloud. Beginning with the statement that Emperor Xiaojing begot fourteen sons and that the seventh son was Liu Sheng, Prince Jing of Zhongshan, the genealogy records generation by generation the order in which each father begot his son. Among them, Liu Bi, Marquis of Yuanze, begot Liu Da, Marquis of Yingchuan; Liu Da begot Liu Buyi, Marquis of Fengling; Liu Buyi begot Liu Hui, Marquis of Jichuan; and Liu Hui begot Liu Xiong, Prefect of Fan in Dong Commandery. The genealogy ends with the words that Liu Xiong begot Liu Hong, that Liu Hong held no office, and that Liu Bei is the son of Liu Hong. Romance, Ch. 20 §4–6

When the generations in the genealogy are worked out, Liu Bei turns out to be of the generation of the emperor's uncle. Greatly pleased, Emperor Xian invites him into a side hall, performs the rites between uncle and nephew and makes him General of the Left and Marquis of Yicheng Village, and from then on everyone calls Liu Bei Imperial Uncle Liu. In the Romance, Liu Buyi appears nowhere outside this genealogy. Romance, Ch. 20 §6–7
