Profile
Liu Yi is a remote ancestor of Liu Bei whose name appears in the genealogy of the imperial clan read out before Emperor Xian by the Minister of the Imperial Clan in Chapter 20 of the Romance. The genealogy records that Liu Shu, Marquis of Zuyi, begot Liu Yi, Marquis of Qiyang, and that Liu Yi begot Liu Bi, Marquis of Yuanze. The genealogy gives only his name and fief, and nothing of his deeds. Romance, Ch. 20 §4–5
Of the 120 chapters of the Romance his name appears only in Chapter 20, and no chapter has his name in its title. Chen Shou's main text of the Biography of the First Sovereign records only that Liu Bei was a descendant of Liu Sheng, Prince Jing of Zhongshan, a son of Emperor Jing of Han, and that his grandfather was Liu Xiong and his father Liu Hong, without giving the number of generations or the names in between, and Liu Yi appears neither in Chen Shou's main text nor in Pei Songzhi's commentary. In the Romance
In Chapter 20 of the Romance, Cao Cao, having had Lü Bu's wife and daughter carried back to Xudu and returned in triumph, presents a memorial at the court held by Emperor Xian the next day reporting Xuande's military merits, and brings him to see the emperor. When the emperor summons him up into the hall and asks who his ancestors were, Xuande replies that he is a descendant of the Prince Jing of Zhongshan and a great-great-grandson of Emperor Xiaojing, the grandson of Liu Xiong and the son of Liu Hong. Romance, Ch. 20 §3–4
The emperor has the genealogy of the imperial clan brought for examination and has the Minister of the Imperial Clan read it aloud. After stating that Emperor Xiaojing begot fourteen sons and that his seventh son was Liu Sheng, Prince Jing of Zhongshan, the genealogy goes on through the names and fiefs of each generation: Liu Zhen, Marquis of Lucheng Village; Liu Ang, Marquis of Pei; Liu Lu, Marquis of Zhang; Liu Lian, Marquis of Yishui; Liu Ying, Marquis of Qinyang; Liu Jian, Marquis of Anguo; Liu Ai, Marquis of Guangling; Liu Xian, Marquis of Jiaoshui; and Liu Shu, Marquis of Zuyi. It then records that Liu Shu begot Liu Yi, Marquis of Qiyang, and that Liu Yi begot Liu Bi, Marquis of Yuanze. These two passages of the genealogy are the only places in the Romance where Liu Yi's name appears. Romance, Ch. 20 §4–5
Below Liu Bi, the genealogy passes through Liu Da, Marquis of Yingchuan, Liu Buyi, Marquis of Fengling, Liu Hui, Marquis of Jichuan, Liu Xiong, Prefect of Fan in Dong Commandery, and Liu Hong, who held no office, and reaches Liu Bei. When the emperor works out the generations in the genealogy, Xuande turns out to be of the generation of the emperor's uncles; greatly pleased, the emperor invites him into a side hall, performs the rites between uncle and nephew, and then makes him General of the Left and Marquis of Yicheng Village. From then on everyone calls him the Imperial Uncle Liu. Romance, Ch. 20 §6–7
