Profile

Liu Shu is a figure whose name appears in Liu Bei's genealogy, read aloud by the Minister of the Imperial Clan in Chapter 20 of the Romance. The genealogy records him as the son of Liu Xian, Marquis of Jiaoshui, and the father of Liu Yi, Marquis of Qiyang, and gives his title as Marquis of Zuyi. Romance, Ch. 20 §5

He appears in only one of the Romance's 120 chapters, Chapter 20; his name is in no chapter title, and there is no scene in which he speaks or acts himself. The Biography of the First Sovereign in Chen Shou's main text records only that Liu Bei was a descendant of Liu Sheng, Prince Jing of Zhongshan, a son of Emperor Jing of Han; that Liu Sheng's son Liu Zhen was enfeoffed as Marquis of Lucheng Neighborhood in Zhuo County, lost his title over the matter of the tribute gold (zhoujin) and settled there with his family; and that Liu Bei's grandfather was Liu Xiong and his father Liu Hong, without recording the line of descent in between. Liu Shu appears neither in Chen Shou's main text nor in Pei Songzhi's commentary. Romance, Ch. 20 §5Records, Shu 2 §2

In the Romance

In Chapter 20 of the Romance, on the day after Cao Cao's army returns to Xuchang, Emperor Xian holds court, and Cao Cao submits a memorial reporting Liu Bei's military merits and brings him to see the emperor. When Emperor Xian asks who his ancestors were, Liu Bei replies that he is a descendant of Prince Jing of Zhongshan and a great-great-grandson of Emperor Xiaojing, the grandson of Liu Xiong and the son of Liu Hong. Romance, Ch. 20 §3–4

Emperor Xian has the genealogy of the imperial clan brought for inspection and has the Minister of the Imperial Clan read it aloud. The genealogy begins by saying that Emperor Xiaojing had fourteen sons and that the seventh son was Liu Sheng, Prince Jing of Zhongshan, and, after Liu Sheng begot Liu Zhen, Marquis of Lucheng Neighborhood, it sets down generation by generation each father begetting his son. Among them, Liu Ai, Marquis of Guangling, begot Liu Xian, Marquis of Jiaoshui; Liu Xian begot Liu Shu, Marquis of Zuyi; Liu Shu begot Liu Yi, Marquis of Qiyang; and Liu Yi begot Liu Bi, Marquis of Yuanze. The genealogy then descends six more generations and ends with the words that Liu Bei is the son of Liu Hong. Romance, Ch. 20 §4–6

Reckoning the generations in the genealogy, Liu Bei turns out to be of the generation of Emperor Xian's uncles. Greatly pleased, Emperor Xian invites him into a side hall, observes the courtesies between uncle and nephew, and makes him General of the Left and Marquis of Yicheng Neighborhood, and from then on everyone calls Liu Bei the Imperial Uncle Liu. In the Romance, Liu Shu does not appear anywhere outside this genealogy. Romance, Ch. 20 §6–7
