Profile
Liu Xian is a name that appears in the genealogy of the imperial clan read out before Emperor Xian by the Minister of the Imperial Clan in Chapter 20 of the Romance. According to the genealogy, he was the son of Liu Ai, Marquis of Guangling, was Marquis of Jiaoshui, and begot Liu Shu, Marquis of Zuyi. The genealogy then passes through Liu Yi, Marquis of Qiyang, Liu Bi, Marquis of Yuanze, Liu Da, Marquis of Yingchuan, Liu Buyi, Marquis of Fengling, Liu Hui, Marquis of Jichuan, Liu Xiong, Prefect of Fan in Dong Commandery, and Liu Hong, and reaches Liu Bei. Romance, Ch. 20 §4–6
He appears in only 1 of the Romance's 120 chapters, Chapter 20, and his name is in no chapter title. He appears neither in Chen Shou's main text nor in Pei Songzhi's commentary. The Biography of the First Sovereign in Chen Shou's main text records only that Liu Bei's grandfather was Liu Xiong and his father Liu Hong, and does not record the line of descent between Liu Zhen, son of Liu Sheng, Prince Jing of Zhongshan, and Liu Xiong. In the Romance
In Chapter 20 of the Romance, Cao Cao, having had Lü Bu's wife and daughter carried back to Xudu and returned in triumph, comes back to Xuchang, rewards those who took part in the campaign, and lodges Xuande in a residence near the Chancellor's office. The next day, when Emperor Xian holds court, Cao Cao submits a memorial reporting Xuande's military merits and leads him in to see the emperor. Asked by the emperor who his ancestors were, Xuande replies that he is a descendant of the Prince Jing of Zhongshan and a great-great-grandson of Emperor Xiaojing, the grandson of Liu Xiong and the son of Liu Hong. Romance, Ch. 20 §3–4
The emperor has the genealogy of the imperial clan brought for examination and has the Minister of the Imperial Clan read it aloud. Beginning with Liu Sheng, Prince Jing of Zhongshan, the seventh of Emperor Xiaojing's fourteen sons, the genealogy reads down through the names and fiefs of each generation. Liu Xian's name appears in the passage 'Liu Jian begot Liu Ai, Marquis of Guangling. Liu Ai begot Liu Xian, Marquis of Jiaoshui. Liu Xian begot Liu Shu, Marquis of Zuyi,' and the genealogy ends with 'Liu Bei is the son of Liu Hong.' In the Romance, Liu Xian's name appears only in these two sentences. Romance, Ch. 20 §4–6
Reckoning the generations in the genealogy, Xuande turned out to be of the generation of the emperor's uncles. Overjoyed, the emperor invites him into a side hall and observes the courtesies between uncle and nephew, thinking to himself that Cao Cao wields power and none of the affairs of state go as he himself wishes, but that now, having gained such a heroic uncle, he will have help. The emperor makes Xuande General of the Left and Marquis of Yicheng Neighborhood, and from then on everyone calls him the Imperial Uncle Liu. Romance, Ch. 20 §6–7
When Cao Cao returns to the Chancellor's office, Xun Yu and the other advisers say they fear that the Son of Heaven's acknowledging Liu Bei as his uncle may do their lord no good. Cao Cao answers that, since Liu Bei has been acknowledged as Imperial Uncle, he will be all the less able to disobey when commanded by the Son of Heaven's edicts, and that if he is kept in Xudu, he may be near the sovereign in name but in reality will be in Cao Cao's own grasp. Romance, Ch. 20 §8
