Profile
Liu Ai is a figure whose name appears in the genealogy of Liu Bei's family read out by the Minister of the Imperial Clan in Chapter 20 of the Romance. In this genealogy, which begins with Liu Sheng, Prince Jing of Zhongshan, the seventh son of Emperor Xiaojing, he is Marquis of Guangling, the son of Liu Jian, Marquis of Anguo, who was himself the son of Liu Ying, Marquis of Qinyang, and the father of Liu Xian, Marquis of Jiaoshui. The line of the genealogy then passes through Liu Xiong and Liu Hong down to Liu Bei. Romance, Ch. 20 §4–6
He appears in only one of the Romance's 120 chapters, Chapter 20, and his name is in no chapter title. His name occurs only in the one section where the genealogy is read, and no deeds of his are recorded apart from his title. He does not appear in Chen Shou's main text or in Pei Songzhi's commentary. The Biography of the First Sovereign in Chen Shou's main text records only that Liu Bei was a descendant of Liu Sheng, Prince Jing of Zhongshan, and that Liu Sheng's son Liu Zhen was enfeoffed as Marquis of Lucheng Village in Zhuo County in the 6th year of Yuanshou (117 BCE); it does not record the number of generations or their names from then down to Liu Bei's grandfather Liu Xiong. In the Romance
In Chapter 20 of the Romance, Cao Cao sends Lü Bu's wife and daughter to the capital Xu, returns to Xuchang and rewards those who took part in the campaign; the next day, when Emperor Xian holds court, he submits a memorial reporting Liu Bei's military merits and then brings him to see the emperor. Asked by the emperor who his ancestors were, Liu Bei replies that he is a descendant of the Prince Jing of Zhongshan and a great-great-grandson of Emperor Xiaojing, the grandson of Liu Xiong and the son of Liu Hong. Romance, Ch. 20 §3–4
The emperor has the clan genealogy brought for inspection and orders the Minister of the Imperial Clan to read it aloud. The genealogy says that Emperor Xiaojing begot fourteen sons and that the seventh son was Liu Sheng, Prince Jing of Zhongshan, and reads through the generations from Liu Sheng's son Liu Zhen, Marquis of Lucheng Village, by way of Liu Ang, Marquis of Pei, Liu Lu, Marquis of Zhang, Liu Lian, Marquis of Yishui, and Liu Ying, Marquis of Qinyang, down to Liu Jian, Marquis of Anguo. It goes on, 'Liu Jian begot Liu Ai, Marquis of Guangling,' and continues that Liu Ai begot Liu Xian, Marquis of Jiaoshui, Liu Xian begot Liu Shu, Marquis of Zuyi, and Liu Shu begot Liu Yi, Marquis of Qiyang. Romance, Ch. 20 §4–5
The genealogy goes on reading out the names and fiefs of generation after generation and ends: 'Liu Hui begot Liu Xiong, Prefect of Fan in Dong Commandery. Liu Xiong begot Liu Hong. Liu Hong held no office. Liu Bei is the son of Liu Hong.' When the emperor works out the generations in the genealogy, Liu Bei turns out to be of the generation of the emperor's uncle. Greatly pleased, the emperor invites him into a side hall, performs the rites between uncle and nephew, and makes Liu Bei General of the Left and Marquis of Yicheng Village, and from then on everyone calls him Imperial Uncle Liu. Romance, Ch. 20 §6–7
