Profile

Liu Ang is a man whose name appears in the genealogy of Liu Bei's family read out by the Minister of the Imperial Clan in Chapter 20 of the Romance. The genealogy records that Liu Sheng, Prince Jing of Zhongshan, the seventh son of Emperor Xiaojing, begot Liu Zhen, Marquis of Lucheng Neighborhood; that Liu Zhen begot Liu Ang, Marquis of Pei; and that Liu Ang begot Liu Lu, Marquis of Zhang. The Romance records no deeds of his apart from his name and title. Romance, Ch. 20 §4–5

He appears in only 1 of the Romance's 120 chapters, Chapter 20, and his name is in no chapter title. The Biography of the First Sovereign in Chen Shou's main text records only that Liu Bei was a descendant of Liu Sheng, Prince Jing of Zhongshan, a son of Emperor Jing of Han, and that Liu Sheng's son Liu Zhen was enfeoffed as Marquis of Lucheng Neighborhood in Zhuo County in the 6th year of Yuanshou (117 BCE), but lost his marquisate over the matter of the tribute gold (zhoujin) and settled his family there; it does not record the line of descent after that. Liu Ang's name appears neither in Chen Shou's main text nor in Pei Songzhi's commentary. Romance, Ch. 20 §5Records, Shu 2 §2

In the Romance

In Chapter 20 of the Romance, Cao Cao has Lü Bu's wife and daughter carried back to Xudu, returns in triumph to Xuchang, and lodges Xuande in a residence near the Chancellor's office. The next day, when Emperor Xian holds court, Cao Cao submits a memorial reporting Xuande's military merits and leads him in to see the emperor. When Emperor Xian asks who his ancestors were, Xuande replies that he is a descendant of the Prince Jing of Zhongshan and a great-great-grandson of Emperor Xiaojing, the grandson of Liu Xiong and the son of Liu Hong. Emperor Xian has the genealogy of the imperial clan brought for examination and has the Minister of the Imperial Clan read it aloud. Romance, Ch. 20 §3–4

The genealogy says that Emperor Xiaojing begot fourteen sons, the seventh of whom was Liu Sheng, Prince Jing of Zhongshan. Liu Sheng begot Liu Zhen, Marquis of Lucheng Neighborhood; Liu Zhen begot Liu Ang, Marquis of Pei; and Liu Ang begot Liu Lu, Marquis of Zhang. The line then passes through Liu Lian, Marquis of Yishui, Liu Ying, Marquis of Qinyang, and others to Liu Hui, Marquis of Jichuan, Liu Xiong, Prefect of Fan in Dong Commandery, and Liu Hong, who did not take office, and ends with the words that Liu Bei is the son of Liu Hong. Reckoning the generations in the genealogy, Xuande turns out to be of the generation of the emperor's uncles, and Emperor Xian, overjoyed, observes the courtesies between uncle and nephew in a side hall and then makes him General of the Left and Marquis of Yicheng Neighborhood. From then on people call him the Imperial Uncle Liu. Romance, Ch. 20 §4–7
