Profile

Shi Zuan was the Major of Deng Ai of Wei. He has no biography of his own in the Records and appears only in three passages of the biography of Deng Ai. In the winter of the 4th year of Jingyuan (263), when Deng Ai entered Shu by the Yinping road, he attacked Zhuge Zhan at Mianzhu together with Deng Ai's son Deng Zhong. At first the fighting went badly and he fell back, but when Deng Ai was about to behead him he went back, fought again and crushed the enemy. Records, Wei 28 §67 · 71–72

After Shu surrendered he concurrently held the post of Inspector of Yi Province, and together with Zhong Hui, Hu Lie and others he reported that Deng Ai's conduct was perverse and rebellious, whereupon Deng Ai was summoned in a prisoner's cart. Chen Shou's main text does not record his later deeds or his death. Records, Wei 28 §74 · 80

In the Romance he first appears in Chapter 111 as Deng Ai's Colonel before the Tent, and he appears in 5 of the 120 chapters, though no chapter has his name in its title. He is given the ambush at Duangu and the defense of the Qishan camp, is twice defeated by Zhuge Zhan's troops at Mianzhu in Chapter 117, and is made Inspector of Yi Province in Chapter 118. In the Records

In the autumn of the 4th year of Jingyuan (263), an edict was issued and the armies attacked Shu. In the 10th month, in winter, Deng Ai marched more than seven hundred li through uninhabited land by the Yinping road, and the Shu garrison commander Ma Miao surrendered. The Shu General of the Guards Zhuge Zhan returned from Fu County to Mianzhu, drew up his ranks and awaited Deng Ai. Records, Wei 28 §67 · 71

Deng Ai sent his son Deng Zhong, Marquis of Huitang Village, and others out on the right, and the Major Shi Zuan and others out on the left. When the fighting went badly, Deng Zhong and Shi Zuan both fell back and said, 'The enemy cannot be attacked.' Deng Ai, angry, said, 'The division between survival and ruin rests on this one stroke — what cannot be done?', rebuked the two and the others, and was about to behead them. Deng Zhong and Shi Zuan galloped back, fought again and crushed the enemy, taking the heads of Zhuge Zhan, the Master of Writing Zhang Zun and others. When Deng Ai advanced to Luo County, Liu Shan sent an envoy to ask to surrender. Records, Wei 28 §72

Having received Liu Shan's surrender at Chengdu, Deng Ai, on the grounds of acting on the emperor's authority, appointed Liu Shan, his heir apparent and the princes to offices. The officials of Shu, according to their rank, were appointed to offices of the dynasty or concurrently made Deng Ai's subordinate officials. At this time Shi Zuan concurrently held the post of Inspector of Yi Province, and Qian Hong, Administrator of Longxi, and others concurrently took charge of the commanderies within Shu. Records, Wei 28 §73–74

When Deng Ai submitted a plan to attack Wu, Sima Wenwang (Sima Zhao) had the Army Supervisor Wei Guan tell him that matters must await a reply and should not be carried out on his own authority. When Deng Ai repeatedly defended his actions by citing the principles of the Spring and Autumn Annals, Zhong Hui, Hu Lie, Shi Zuan and others all reported that Deng Ai's conduct was perverse and rebellious. An edict was issued summoning Deng Ai in a prisoner's cart. Records, Wei 28 §77 · 79–80

After Deng Ai and his son were imprisoned, Zhong Hui rose in revolt at Chengdu and died, and Tian Xu and others sent by Wei Guan beheaded Deng Ai west of Mianzhu. In Chen Shou's main text, Shi Zuan's name does not appear again after his report against Deng Ai, and his death is not recorded either. Records, Wei 28 §81 · 80–90

In the Romance

In Chapter 111 of the Romance, Deng Ai, reckoning that Jiang Wei will come to contend for Wucheng Mountain, gives his son Deng Zhong and the Colonel before the Tent Shi Zuan 5,000 troops each and has them lie in ambush in advance at Duangu. When Jiang Wei, having failed to take Wucheng Mountain, enters Duangu on his way to attack Shanggui, the two forces of Shi Zuan and Deng Zhong charge out, Deng Ai strikes from the front, and caught in a three-way pincer the Shu army is badly defeated. Romance, Ch. 111 §13–14 · 18–19

In Chapter 113, Deng Ai has a tunnel dug from the Qishan camp to the Shu camp, and has Deng Zhong and Shi Zuan each lead 10,000 troops to strike from left and right. But when Jiang Wei orders his men not to move rashly and only to shoot with bows and crossbows, the Wei troops charge more than ten times and in the end fail to break in. Romance, Ch. 113 §25–28

In Chapter 115, when Deng Ai goes to relieve Taoyang, he leaves only the lieutenant general Shi Zuan to guard the Qishan camp. When the Shu army challenges him to battle day after day, Deng Ai says that Shi Zuan, guarding the camp, has few troops and little wisdom and will surely lose, and goes in person to relieve him. Just as Shi Zuan, unable to withstand Zhang Yi's attack, is about to see the camp fall, Deng Ai's troops arrive and defeat the Shu army. Romance, Ch. 115 §6 · 14–15 · 18

In Chapter 117, when Deng Ai returns to his own camp after meeting Zhong Hui, Shi Zuan, Deng Zhong and others greet him. After crossing Yinping, Deng Ai looks over the map presented by Ma Miao and tells Shi Zuan and his son Deng Zhong to go through the night to Mianzhu to hold off the Shu army, warning that he will behead them if they are late. At Mianzhu the two see a banner reading 'Chancellor of Han, Zhuge, Marquis Wu' and a four-wheeled carriage, and crying that Kongming is still alive, they flee in fright; when Deng Ai is about to behead them for withdrawing without even fighting, the others earnestly dissuade him. Romance, Ch. 117 §10 · 31–35

The figure seated on the carriage was a wooden effigy of Kongming. When Deng Ai says he will surely behead them if they fail to win again, the two go out once more with 10,000 troops, but are driven back by Zhuge Shang, badly defeated by Zhuge Zhan's troops, and flee wounded. Seeing that both are wounded, Deng Ai cannot rebuke them further. In Chapter 118, after winning Shu, Deng Ai makes Shi Zuan Inspector of Yi Province. Romance, Ch. 117 §35–37Romance, Ch. 118 §20
