Sun Huan, courtesy name Shuwu, was the son of Sun He (孫河). According to the account of Sun Shao in the same volume, Sun He, courtesy name Bohai, had originally been surnamed Yu and was also a man of Wu. Sun Ce was fond of him, granted him the surname Sun and entered him in the clan register, and Sun He later became a general and was stationed at Jingcheng. When Sun Yi was murdered, Sun He galloped to Wanling and rebuked Gui Lan and Dai Yuan, and was killed by the two of them. Records, Wu 6 §49 · 40 · 42
In the 1st year of Huangwu (222), when Liu Bei led a great army toward the western border, Sun Quan made Lu Xun Grand Commander, gave him the tally of authority and had him lead Zhu Ran, Pan Zhang, Song Qian, Han Dang, Xu Sheng, Xianyu Dan, Sun Huan and others, 50,000 men in all, to resist him. At the age of twenty-five Sun Huan was appointed General of the Household Who Pacifies the East and resisted Liu Bei together with Lu Xun. Records, Wu 13 §17Records, Wu 6 §49
At first Sun Huan, on a separate mission, attacked Liu Bei's vanguard at Yidao, was surrounded by Liu Bei and asked Lu Xun for help. When Lu Xun said it was not yet possible, the generals said that Sun of Andong was a member of the ruling house, and he was surrounded and already in distress, so how could he not be relieved? Lu Xun said, 'Andong has won the hearts of his soldiers, his city is strong and his provisions are ample, so there is nothing to worry about. Once my plan unfolds, even if I do not relieve Andong, Andong will be freed of himself.' Records, Wu 13 §23
Liu Bei's army was very numerous, covering the mountains and filling the valleys, and Sun Huan threw away his sword and fought at the risk of his life. Joining forces with Lu Xun, he at last put Liu Bei to flight. Sun Huan cut the Shangkui road and blocked its key passes, and Liu Bei barely escaped by crossing mountains and passing through rugged country. Liu Bei, indignant and bitter, sighed, 'When I first came to Jingcheng long ago, Sun Huan was still a little boy, and now he drives me to this extremity!' Records, Wu 6 §49
After Lu Xun's plan had unfolded on a grand scale and Liu Bei had indeed broken and fled, Sun Huan met Lu Xun and said, 'Earlier I truly resented not being relieved, but now that it has come to this I see that your command had its own method all along.' Records, Wu 13 §23

In his assessment of the Biographies of the Ruling House, Chen Shou said that the bond of kinship and favor toward one's relatives is an unchanging principle in past and present, and that because these various members of the Sun clan had either helped lay the first foundations of the state or held and guarded the frontiers, proving equal to their duties and not disgracing their honors, he had recorded them in detail. Records, Wu 6 §52
In Chapter 82 of the Romance, when the Shu army advances by land and water, Sun Quan sighs that now that Lü Meng is dead there is no one to share his cares. At that moment a young general steps forward and, saying that though he is young he has studied military texts fairly well, asks for several tens of thousands of troops. The Romance introduces him as the son of Sun He (孫河): Sun He was originally surnamed Yu, but Sun Ce granted him the surname Sun and he became a member of the King of Wu's clan; Sun Huan was the eldest of four sons, skilled in archery and horsemanship, had been made Commandant of the Martial Guard, and was then twenty-five years old. Romance, Ch. 82 §19–20
Sun Huan says he will take his senior generals Li Yi and Xie Jing and capture Liu Bei, and Sun Quan, saying his nephew is young, assigns him Zhu Ran, General of Tiger-like Might, musters 50,000 troops by land and water, and makes Sun Huan Commander of the Left and Zhu Ran Commander of the Right. Sun Huan sets up three camps, front and rear, at the border pass of Yidu with 25,000 men and horses, and the First Sovereign, hearing of it, says, 'How dare this little boy stand against Us!' and sends Guan Xing and Zhang Bao (張苞). Romance, Ch. 82 §21–23
Before the battle lines, Sun Huan retorts to the abusive Zhang Bao that 'your father has already become a headless ghost', but Xie Jing is defeated by Zhang Bao and flees, Li Yi is beheaded by Guan Xing, and Sun Huan is heavily defeated. The next day Sun Huan fights Guan Xing for more than thirty bouts, runs out of strength and is defeated, Xie Jing dies on Zhang Bao's spear, and Tan Xiong, who had shot a stealthy arrow, is captured by Guan Xing. That night Feng Xi, Zhang Nan and Wu Ban raid his camp along three routes, and Sun Huan flees to the city of Yiling, where he is surrounded by Wu Ban and others and asks the King of Wu for help. Romance, Ch. 82 §24–29 · 31 · 35 · 37–38
In Chapter 83, Zhou Tai (周泰) asks Lu Xun, who has come as Grand Commander, to rescue quickly Sun Huan, General Who Pacifies the East, who is the sovereign's nephew and is trapped in the city of Yiling with neither provisions nor relief. Lu Xun says that Sun of Andong has deeply won the hearts of his troops and will surely hold fast, and that once Shu is defeated he will come out of himself, and the generals laugh at him inwardly. Romance, Ch. 83 §40–42
In Chapter 84, Wu Ban and Zhang Nan, who have long been besieging the city of Yiling, hear from Feng Xi that the Shu army has been defeated and leave to rescue the First Sovereign, and only then does Sun Huan get out.
