Profile
Lu Jun is a man whose name appears in Chapter 83 of the Romance as the father of Lu Xun. In the passage where Sun Quan summons Lu Xun to make him Grand Commander, the Romance introduces Lu Xun as a man of Wu County in Wu Commandery, the grandson of Lu Yu (陸紆), Colonel of the City Gates under the Han, and the son of Lu Jun, Chief Commandant of Jiujiang. Nothing that Lu Jun himself did is related. Romance, Ch. 83 §36
He appears only in Chapter 83, 1 of the Romance's 120 chapters, and his name is in no chapter title. He does not appear in Chen Shou's main text, and the only record of him is in Pei Songzhi's commentary. The Biography of Lu Xun in Chen Shou's main text says only that Lu Xun came of a family that had for generations been one of the great clans of Jiangdong, and that having lost his father young he followed his great-uncle Lu Kang (陸康), Administrator of Lujiang, and stayed at his post; it does not give his father's name. In the Romance
In Chapter 83 of the Romance, Liu Bei is about to behead the envoy Wu has sent to sue for peace but desists at the earnest pleas of his officials, and declares that he will first destroy Wu and then destroy Wei. When Cheng Bing returns and reports this, Sun Quan is greatly alarmed and at a loss what to do. Kan Ze asks why he does not use the pillar that could hold up the sky, and tells him that in the past the great affairs of Eastern Wu were entrusted to Zhou Lang (Zhou Yu), Lu Zijing (Lu Su) and Lü Ziming (Lü Meng), and that now there is Lu Boyan (Lu Xun) in Jing Province. He says that although Lu Boyan is in name a Confucian scholar, he truly has great talent and grand strategy and is not inferior to Zhou Lang, that the plans by which Lord Guan was defeated earlier all came from him, and that should he fail, Kan Ze himself will share his punishment. Romance, Ch. 83 §33–35
Zhang Zhao says that Lu Xun is a mere scholar and no match for Liu Bei; Gu Yong says he fears that since Lu Xun is young and of slight reputation, the lords will not submit to him; and Bu Zhi says that his talent is fit only for governing a commandery. When Kan Ze cries out that if Lu Boyan is not used Eastern Wu is finished, and that he will stake his whole family as surety for him, Sun Quan says that he too has always known him to be a man of rare talent and has Lu Xun summoned. Romance, Ch. 83 §35–36
At this point the Romance records that Lu Xun's original name was Lu Yi, later changed to Xun, that his courtesy name was Boyan, and that he was a man of Wu County in Wu Commandery, the grandson of Lu Yu (陸紆), Colonel of the City Gates under the Han, and the son of Lu Jun, Chief Commandant of Jiujiang. It says that he was eight chi tall with a face like fine jade, and that he held the post of General Who Guards the West. When Lu Xun arrives in answer to the summons, Sun Quan orders him to take overall command of the troops and defeat Liu Bei, and gives him the sword he wears at his side. In the Romance, Lu Jun's name appears only in this one passage. Romance, Ch. 83 §36–38
