Profile
Lu Yu is a figure whose name appears in Chapter 83 of the Romance as the grandfather of Lu Xun. In the passage where Sun Quan has Lu Xun summoned, the Romance records that Lu Xun was a man of Wu County in Wu Commandery, the grandson of Lu Yu, Colonel of the City Gates under the Han, and the son of Lu Jun, Chief Commandant of Jiujiang. Romance, Ch. 83 §36
Of the 120 chapters of the Romance he appears in only one, Chapter 83; no chapter has his name in its title, and there is no scene in which he himself speaks or acts. He does not appear in Chen Shou's main text and is recorded only in Pei Songzhi's commentary. The Biography of Lu Xun in Chen Shou's main text states only that Lu Xun was a man of Wu County in Wu Commandery, that his family had for generations been a great clan of Jiangdong, and that he lost his father when young, without naming his grandfather or father; the Eulogies of the Lu Clan (Lu shi shi song), cited in Pei Songzhi's commentary on that passage, records that Lu Xun's grandfather Lu Yu was quick of thought and learned and served as Colonel of the City Gates. In the Romance
In Chapter 83 of the Romance, Liu Bei receives the head of Zhang Fei and Fan Jiang (范疆) and Zhang Da, sent by Eastern Wu, yet still rejects peace and declares that he will first destroy Wu and then destroy Wei. When Sun Quan, hearing the report of Cheng Bing on his return, is greatly alarmed and at a loss what to do, Kan Ze says there is a pillar that can hold up the sky and recommends Lu Boyan, who is in Jing Province. Kan Ze says that although he is in name a Confucian scholar, he has outstanding talent and great strategic vision, not inferior to Zhou Yu; that the plans by which Guan Yu was earlier defeated all came from him; and that if he fails, Kan Ze himself will share his punishment. Romance, Ch. 83 §31–35
Zhang Zhao says that Lu Xun is a mere scholar and no match for Liu Bei, Gu Yong says he fears the lords will not submit to him because he is young and of slight reputation, and Bu Zhi says his talent is fit only to govern a commandery. When Kan Ze cries out that if Lu Boyan is not employed Eastern Wu is finished, and that he will stake his whole household as surety, Sun Quan says that he too has always known him to be a man of rare talent and has Lu Xun summoned. Romance, Ch. 83 §35–36
At this point the Romance introduces Lu Xun. Lu Xun's original name was Lu Yi, later changed to Xun; his courtesy name was Boyan, and he was a man of Wu County in Wu Commandery. He was the grandson of Lu Yu, Colonel of the City Gates under the Han, and the son of Lu Jun, Chief Commandant of Jiujiang; he was eight chi tall with a face like fine jade, and held office as General Who Guards the West. Sun Quan then, as Kan Ze advised, has an altar built through the night and, before all the officials, makes Lu Xun Grand Commander, Protector of the Army of the Right, and General Who Guards the West, and promotes his enfeoffment to Marquis of Lou. In the Romance Lu Yu does not appear again after this passage introducing Lu Xun. Romance, Ch. 83 §36 · 38–39
