Profile

Qin Song, courtesy name Wenbiao, came from the same commandery as Zhang Hong, a man of Guangling. When Sun Ce took Kuaiji and appointed new senior officials, Qin Song became one of his chief advisers together with Zhang Zhao, Zhang Hong, Chen Duan and others, and together with Zhang Hong he was treated with favour by Sun Ce and took part in his planning. He has no biography of his own in the Records and appears in the Biographies of Sun Jian and Sun Ce in Records of Wu 1, in the account of Zhang Hong in the Biographies of Zhang Hong, Yan Jun, Cheng Bing, Kan Ze and Xue Zong in Records of Wu 8, and in the account of Lu Ji in the Biographies of Yu, Lu, Zhang, Luo, Lu, Wu and Zhu in Records of Wu 12. Chen Shou records only that Qin Song and Chen Duan both died early, without giving the year of his death, and his name does not appear in the assessment of Records of Wu 8 either. In Sun Quan's words recorded in Records of Wu 9, there is a passage saying that when Cao Cao boasted of coming down after gaining Jing Province, Zibu and Wenbiao said that envoys should be sent to welcome him; in Chen Shou's main text, Qin Song is the only person whose courtesy name is Wenbiao. He does not appear in the Romance. Records, Wu 8 §10 · 63Records, Wu 9 §90–91

In the Records

Sun Ce crossed the Zhe River, took Kuaiji, massacred Dongye and then crushed Yan Baihu and others, and replaced all the senior officials. Sun Ce himself took the post of Administrator of Kuaiji and made Wu Jing Administrator of Danyang, Sun Ben Administrator of Yuzhang, Sun Fu Administrator of Luling and Zhu Zhi Administrator of Wu Commandery. At this time Zhang Zhao of Pengcheng, Zhang Hong of Guangling, Qin Song, Chen Duan and others became his chief advisers. Records, Wu 1 §31

According to the Biography of Lu Ji, when Sun Ce was in Wu, Zhang Zhao, Zhang Hong and Qin Song were his honoured guests, and together they argued that since the realm was not yet at peace, it must be governed and pacified by force of arms. Lu Ji, who was young at the time and sat in the lowest seat, called out loudly from afar that Guan Yiwu had assembled the feudal lords nine times and set the realm right once without using war chariots, and that Confucius had said that if people from afar did not submit, one should cultivate civil virtue to draw them in; the speakers now esteemed only force of arms, and he privately felt uneasy about it. Zhang Zhao and the others thought him remarkable. Records, Wu 12 §18–19

The Biography of Zhang Hong adds at its end that Qin Song, courtesy name Wenbiao, and Chen Duan, courtesy name Zizheng, men of the same commandery as Zhang Hong, were both treated with favour by Sun Ce together with Zhang Hong and took part in his planning, and records that both died early. Zhang Hong was a man of Guangling. Records, Wu 8 §2 · 10

The Biographies of Zhou Yu, Lu Su and Lü Meng record Sun Quan's words to Lu Xun discussing Zhou Yu, Lu Su and Lü Meng. Sun Quan recalled that when Mengde (Cao Cao), riding the momentum of having gained Liu Cong, boasted that he would come down by water and land together with a host of several hundred thousand, he summoned all his generals and asked what should be done, but no one answered first, and when it came to Zibu and Wenbiao, both said that envoys should be sent with a proclamation to welcome him. Zibu was Zhang Zhao's courtesy name, and in Chen Shou's main text the only person whose courtesy name is Wenbiao is Qin Song of the Biography of Zhang Hong. Lu Su at once refuted this, said it must not be done, and urged Sun Quan to summon Zhou Yu quickly to meet the enemy head on, and Sun Quan counted this as the second of his satisfactions. Chen Shou's main text does not record the year of Qin Song's death or his offices. The assessment of Records of Wu 8 says only that Sun Ce had good reason to treat Zhang Hong next after Zhang Zhao, and does not discuss Qin Song separately. Records, Wu 8 §10 · 63
