Profile
Chen Duan, courtesy name Zizheng, was from the same commandery as Zhang Hong of Guangling. When Sun Ce took Kuaiji and appointed new senior officials, he became one of the chief advisers together with Zhang Zhao, Zhang Hong, Qin Song and others, and together with Zhang Hong he was well treated by Sun Ce and took part in his planning. He has no biography of his own in the Records; he appears in the Biographies of Sun Jian and Sun Ce in Records of Wu 1 and in the record of Zhang Hong in the Biographies of Zhang, Yan, Cheng, Kan and Xue in Records of Wu 8. Records, Wu 8 §2 · 10Records, Wu 1 §31
Chen Shou wrote only that Qin Song and Chen Duan both died early, without giving the year of his death, and his name does not appear in the assessment in Records of Wu 8 either. He does not appear in the Romance. Records, Wu 8 §10 · 63
In the Records
Sun Ce persuaded Yuan Shu to let him set out to pacify Jiangdong, and after crossing the river he defeated every enemy he fought. When Liu Yao abandoned his army and fled, Sun Ce crossed the Zhe River, took Kuaiji, massacred Dongye and then crushed Yan Baihu and others, and he appointed new senior officials throughout. Records, Wu 1 §29–31
Sun Ce himself took the post of Administrator of Kuaiji, made Wu Jing Administrator of Danyang and Sun Ben Administrator of Yuzhang, divided Yuzhang to form Luling Commandery, and made Sun Ben's younger brother Sun Fu Administrator of Luling and Zhu Zhi of Danyang Administrator of Wu Commandery. At that time Zhang Zhao of Pengcheng, Zhang Hong of Guangling, Qin Song, Chen Duan and others became his chief advisers. Records, Wu 1 §31
At its end, the Biography of Zhang Hong adds that Qin Song, courtesy name Wenbiao, and Chen Duan, courtesy name Zizheng, who were from the same commandery as Zhang Hong, were both well treated by Sun Ce together with Zhang Hong and took part in his planning, and it records that both died early. Zhang Hong was a man of Guangling. Records, Wu 8 §2 · 10
Chen Shou's main text does not record Chen Duan's offices or the year of his death. The assessment in Records of Wu 8 says only that there was good reason for Sun Ce to treat Zhang Hong second only to Zhang Zhao, and does not discuss Chen Duan separately. Records, Wu 1 §31Records, Wu 8 §10 · 63
