Yang Xin was the Administrator of Jincheng for Wei. The Records give him no biography of his own; he appears in the record of Deng Ai in the Biographies of Wang, Guanqiu, Zhuge, Deng and Zhong (Records of Wei 28). Chen Shou's main text does not record his courtesy name, origin or death. Records, Wei 28 §67–68
In the 4th year of Jingyuan (263), when Wei attacked Shu, he went to Gansong on Deng Ai's orders, and when Jiang Wei withdrew on hearing that Zhong Hui's army had entered Hanzhong, Yang Xin pursued him and fought a great battle at Qiangchuankou, and Jiang Wei was defeated and fled. The assessment of Volume 28 does not deal with him. In the Romance he appears in Chapter 116 as the Administrator of Jincheng summoned by Deng Ai, appearing in 1 of the 120 chapters, and no chapter title bears his name. The Romance depicts him burning the camps at Gansong, then facing Jiang Wei at Qiangchuankou and fleeing after losing in a single bout. Records, Wei 28 §67–68 · 140Romance, Ch. 116 §6 · 36 · 39
In the 3rd year of Jingyuan (262) Deng Ai defeated Jiang Wei at Houhe, and Jiang Wei withdrew to hold Tazhong. In the autumn of the 4th year (263) an edict ordered the armies to attack Shu, with the General-in-Chief Sima Zhao directing them all and issuing their orders. Deng Ai was to engage Jiang Wei and pin him down, while Zhuge Xu, Inspector of Yong Province, was charged with cutting Jiang Wei off so that he could not return. Records, Wei 28 §67
Deng Ai sent Wang Qi, Administrator of Tianshui, and others to attack Jiang Wei's camp directly, had Qian Hong, Administrator of Longxi, and others block his front, and sent Yang Xin, Administrator of Jincheng, and others to Gansong. Records, Wei 28 §67
When Jiang Wei heard that Zhong Hui's armies had already entered Hanzhong, he led his army back in retreat. Yang Xin and the others pursued him to Qiangchuankou and fought a great battle, and Jiang Wei was defeated and fled. Hearing that the Yong Province army had already blocked the road and was stationed at Qiaotou, Jiang Wei entered the northern road from Konghan Valley, intending to come out behind the Yong Province army; when Zhuge Xu heard of this and fell back thirty li, Jiang Wei, who had gone more than thirty li along the northern road, promptly turned back and passed Qiaotou. Jiang Wei finally withdrew east and returned to hold Jiange. Records, Wei 28 §68–69
This passage is the only place in Chen Shou's main text where Yang Xin appears, and his courtesy name, origin and later life are not recorded. The assessment of Volume 28 discusses only Wang Ling, Guanqiu Jian, Zhuge Dan, Zhong Hui and Deng Ai and does not mention Yang Xin. Records, Wei 28 §67–68 · 140
In Chapter 116 of the Romance, Deng Ai, who is in Longxi, on receiving the edict to attack Shu, has Sima Wang hold back the Qiang, and sends men to Zhuge Xu, Inspector of Yong Province, Wang Qi, Administrator of Tianshui, Qian Hong, Administrator of Longxi, and Yang Xin, Administrator of Jincheng, to have each bring the troops under his command and come to receive orders. When Zhong Hui's dispatch arrives, Deng Ai has Zhuge Xu cut off Jiang Wei's way back, gives Wang Qi and Qian Hong 15,000 men each to attack Tazhong from the left and the right, and has Yang Xin lead 15,000 men to block Jiang Wei's rear at Gansong. Romance, Ch. 116 §6 · 8
At Tazhong, while Jiang Wei is chasing Wang Qi and locked in battle with Qian Hong and Deng Ai's army, word comes that the camps at Gansong have all been burned by Yang Xin, Administrator of Jincheng. When Jiang Wei, hurrying through the night to relieve Gansong, encounters him, Yang Xin dares not fight and flees toward the mountain paths, and Jiang Wei, in pursuit, is kept from advancing by logs and stones pouring down like rain from the rocks above. Romance, Ch. 116 §34–37
When Jiang Wei, having pulled up his camp and withdrawn on news that Hanzhong has been lost, reaches Qiangchuankou that night, Yang Xin deploys his troops and blocks his way. Yang Xin is defeated in a single bout and flees, and the three arrows Jiang Wei shoots in succession all miss. As Jiang Wei, having broken his bow, gives chase with his spear leveled, his horse stumbles and throws him to the ground, and Yang Xin turns his horse and charges back to kill him. But Jiang Wei springs to his feet and drives his spear into the head of Yang Xin's horse, and Wei troops surging up from behind rescue Yang Xin. This is the only chapter of the Romance in which Yang Xin's name appears. Romance, Ch. 116 §38–40
