When eight contingents of the lords who have risen to attack Dong Zhuo go to Hulao Pass to face Lü Bu, and Mu Shun, a subordinate general of Zhang Yang, Administrator of Shangdang, is run through by Lü Bu's halberd and falls from his horse, Wu Anguo gallops out wielding an iron hammer. After fighting for some ten bouts, he has his wrist cut by Lü Bu's halberd, drops his hammer on the ground and flees, and the troops of the eight contingents all advance together to rescue him. Romance, Ch. 5 §42 · 46–47

He appears in only one of the Romance's 120 chapters, Chapter 5, and no chapter has his name in its title. The name Wu Anguo appears neither in Chen Shou's main text nor in Pei Songzhi's commentary. Romance, Ch. 5 §46

In the Romance

In Chapter 5 of the Romance, Dong Zhuo raises 200,000 troops and divides them into two forces: he has Li Jue and Guo Si hold Sishui Pass with 50,000, while he himself, with 150,000, holds Hulao Pass, fifty li from Luoyang, together with Li Ru, Lü Bu and others. Lü Bu sets up a great camp before the pass with 30,000 troops. Learning of this, Yuan Shao, on Cao Cao's advice, divides off eight contingents of lords, including Kong Rong, Zhang Yang and Gongsun Zan, and sends them to Hulao Pass. Romance, Ch. 5 §41–42

The troops of Wang Kuang, Administrator of Henei, who arrive first, are badly defeated by Lü Bu, and three of the lords fall back thirty li and make camp. The forces of five more contingents then arrive and they deliberate together, but all say that Lü Bu is a hero whom no one can match. When Lü Bu comes to challenge them, the eight lords divide their troops into eight units and array them on a high ridge, and Mu Shun, a subordinate general of Zhang Yang, Administrator of Shangdang, rides out with spear leveled, only to be run through by a single thrust of Lü Bu's halberd and fall from his horse. Romance, Ch. 5 §43–46

While all are greatly alarmed, Wu Anguo, a subordinate general of Kong Rong, Administrator of Beihai, gallops out wielding an iron hammer, and Lü Bu spurs his horse to meet him, brandishing his halberd. After they have fought for some ten bouts, Lü Bu's halberd cuts Wu Anguo's wrist, and Wu Anguo drops his hammer on the ground and flees. When the troops of the eight contingents advance together to rescue Wu Anguo, Lü Bu withdraws, and before the lords who have returned to camp, Cao Cao says that Lü Bu is so valiant that no one can stand against him, and that they must gather all eighteen lords to devise a good plan together. Romance, Ch. 5 §46–47

As they are deliberating, Lü Bu again comes to challenge them and pursues Gongsun Zan, whereupon Zhang Fei rides out and fights him for more than fifty bouts, and Guan Yu and Xuande gallop up in turn so that the three of them surround Lü Bu. Finding it more than he can do to fend them off, Lü Bu feints a thrust at Xuande's face and flees up into the pass. Wu Anguo's name never appears in the Romance again. Romance, Ch. 5 §48–51
