Li Peng 李鵬

In Chapter 112 of the Romance, just as Sima Zhao, having pacified Huainan, is about to withdraw his troops, a report comes in that Jiang Wei of Western Shu is coming to seize Changcheng and cut off the grain and fodder. The Romance states that this was the 20th year of Yanxi of Shu-Han and that the era name was changed to the 1st year of Jingyao. Jiang Wei flings to the ground the essay sent to him by the Grand Master of Palace Leisure Qiao Zhou, calling it the argument of a pedantic scholar, and following Fu Qian's advice that, since the grain and fodder Wei had stockpiled were all at Changcheng, they should take the Luo Valley, cross the Shen Ridge, reach Changcheng and burn the provisions first, he advances on Changcheng. Romance, Ch. 112 §22 · 24 · 27–28

Sima Wang, the general guarding Changcheng, was a clan elder cousin of Sima Zhao; inside the city there was a great deal of grain and fodder, but few men and horses. Hearing that the Shu army is coming, Sima Wang hastily leads out troops with two generals, Wang Zhen and Li Peng, pitches camp 20 li from the city, and the next day comes out before the lines with the two generals. Jiang Wei urges him to surrender, saying that since Sima Zhao has moved the sovereign into his army, he must harbor the same intentions as Li Jue and Guo Si, and Sima Wang retorts that unless they withdraw early, he will not let a single piece of their armor return home. Romance, Ch. 112 §29–30

From behind Sima Wang, Wang Zhen rides out levelling his spear and Fu Qian meets him; before ten bouts have been fought, Fu Qian deliberately shows an opening, dodges the thrusting spear and takes Wang Zhen alive from horseback, returning to his own lines. Li Peng, in a great rage, gallops off brandishing his blade to rescue him. Fu Qian deliberately slows his horse, and when Li Peng draws near he hurls Wang Zhen to the ground with all his strength and secretly grasps a four-edged iron mace. Just as Li Peng catches up and raises his blade to strike, Fu Qian twists round to look back and deals Li Peng a single blow in the face with the mace; his eyeballs burst out, and Li Peng falls from his horse dead. Wang Zhen too is stabbed to death by a flurry of Shu spears. Romance, Ch. 112 §30–31

As Jiang Wei drives his troops forward in a great advance, Sima Wang abandons his camp, enters the city and shuts the gates. The next day, when the Shu troops have shot fire arrows and fire bombs into the city and piled dry firewood beneath the walls and set it alight, and the city is about to fall, Wei troops surge up from behind: Deng Ai's son Deng Zhong fights Jiang Wei for thirty to forty bouts, then Deng Ai himself comes out, and both armies withdraw their troops.
