Wang Zhen 王真

In Chapter 112 of the Romance, just as Sima Zhao, having pacified Huainan, is about to withdraw his troops, a report comes in that Jiang Wei of Western Shu is coming to attack Changcheng and cut off the grain and fodder. The Romance states that this was the 20th year of Yanxi of Shu-Han and that the era name was changed to the 1st year of Jingyao. Following Fu Qian's advice that, since the grain and fodder Wei had stockpiled were all at Changcheng, they should take the Luo Valley, cross the Shen Ridge, burn the provisions first and then strike straight at Qinchuan, Jiang Wei advances on Changcheng. Romance, Ch. 112 §22 · 27–28

Sima Wang, the general guarding Changcheng, was a clan elder cousin of Sima Zhao; inside the city there was a great deal of grain and fodder, but few men and horses. Hearing that the Shu army is coming, Sima Wang hastily pitches camp 20 li from the city together with two generals, Wang Zhen and Li Peng, and the next day comes out before the lines leading the two generals. Jiang Wei calls on him to surrender early, and Sima Wang retorts that unless they withdraw early he will not let a single piece of their armor return home; before he has finished speaking, Wang Zhen gallops out from behind Sima Wang levelling his spear, and Fu Qian comes out from the Shu lines to meet him. Romance, Ch. 112 §29–30

Before ten bouts have been fought, Fu Qian deliberately shows an opening, and Wang Zhen at once thrusts in with his spear; Fu Qian dodges it and takes Wang Zhen alive from horseback, returning to his own lines. When Li Peng, in a great rage, charges to the rescue brandishing his blade, Fu Qian deliberately slows his horse, waits for Li Peng to draw near, hurls Wang Zhen to the ground with all his strength and secretly grasps an iron mace, then twists round and strikes Li Peng in the face, killing him. Wang Zhen is stabbed to death by a flurry of Shu spears. Romance, Ch. 112 §30–31

As Jiang Wei drives his troops forward in a great advance, Sima Wang abandons his camp, enters the city and shuts the gates. The next day, when the Shu troops have shot fire arrows and fire bombs into the city and set fire to dry firewood piled beneath the walls, and the city is about to fall, Deng Ai's son Deng Zhong and Deng Ai surge up from behind, and Deng Ai merely holds fast and does not come out to fight. When a report comes that Sima Zhao has attacked Shouchun, killed Zhuge Dan and intends to come to the rescue of Changcheng, Jiang Wei says that this campaign against Wei too has come to nothing, like a painted cake, and that they had better return for now.
