In the Romance
In Chapter 79 of the Romance, after ascending the throne, Cao Pi, King of Wei, promotes his civil and military officials and, leading 300,000 armored troops, tours Qiao County in the state of Pei and offers sacrifice at his ancestral tombs. When word comes that Xiahou Dun is critically ill, he returns to Ye Commandery, but Xiahou Dun has already died; Cao Pi puts on mourning for him and buries him with generous rites. Romance, Ch. 79 §38
Around the 8th month of that year, reports come in that a phoenix has come dancing at Shiyi County, a qilin has appeared at the city of Linzi, and a yellow dragon has appeared at Ye Commandery. The General of the Household Li Fu then confers with Xu Zhi, Assistant to the Grand Astrologer, and proposes that, since these various auspicious omens are signs that Wei will replace Han, the rites for receiving the abdication should be prepared so that the Han emperor hands the realm over to the King of Wei. And so, together with more than forty civil and military officials including Hua Xin, Wang Lang, Xin Pi, Jia Xu, Liu Yi, Liu Ye, Chen Jiao, Chen Qun and Huan Jie, they go straight into the inner palace and ask Emperor Xian to abdicate the imperial throne to Cao Pi, King of Wei. Romance, Ch. 79 §39
In Chapter 80, when Hua Xin memorializes that the emperor should follow the way of Yao and Shun and abdicate to the King of Wei, Emperor Xian is greatly alarmed and, asking how he could lightly cast aside the great enterprise of his ancestors, founded by Gaozu and handed down for four hundred years, tells the officials to deliberate again. Hua Xin brings Li Fu and Xu Zhi forward and says that if His Majesty does not believe it, he may ask these two men. Li Fu declares that since the King of Wei took the throne a qilin has been born, phoenixes have come dancing, a yellow dragon has appeared, fine grain has grown in abundance and sweet dew has fallen; these, he says, are auspicious signs shown by Heaven and indications that Wei will replace Han. Romance, Ch. 80 §1–3
Xu Zhi then interprets the heavenly signs and the prophetic texts and declares that Wei should receive the Han abdication at Xuchang, but Emperor Xian rejects this, saying that auspicious omens and prophecies are all baseless. When Wang Lang presses him, warning that unless he steps aside early trouble will arise, Emperor Xian weeps aloud and withdraws into the rear hall, and the officials leave sneering. Li Fu does not appear in the Romance after this. Romance, Ch. 80 §3–5
