Profile
Zheng Chong was a man of Henan. He has no separate biography in the Records; he is added in a single line at the end of the account of Cheng Bing in the Biographies of Zhang, Yan, Cheng, Kan and Xue in Records of Wu 8. Chen Shou wrote that while Cheng Bing was tutor, Zheng Chong of Henan, Prefect of the Watches, was likewise said to be devoted to learning and upright in conduct. Records, Wu 8 §21
Chen Shou's main text does not record his courtesy name, the years of his birth and death, or anything else he did. In the assessment of Volume 8, Chen Shou called only Yan Jun, Cheng Bing and Kan Ze the Confucian scholars of their age and did not mention Zheng Chong. He does not appear in the Romance. In the Records
According to the account of Cheng Bing in the Biographies of Zhang, Yan, Cheng, Kan and Xue in Records of Wu 8, Cheng Bing was a man of Nandun County in Runan Commandery who had studied under Zheng Xuan; later, fleeing the turmoil to Jiao Province, he examined and discussed the great principles of the classics with Liu Xi, and in the end became thoroughly versed in the Five Classics. Sun Quan, hearing that he was a renowned Confucian scholar, summoned him with due courtesy and appointed him Grand Tutor to the Crown Prince. In the 4th year of Huangwu (225), when Sun Quan arranged for the Crown Prince Sun Deng to take Zhou Yu's daughter as his wife, Cheng Bing, acting as Minister of Ceremonies, received the consort in Wu. Records, Wu 8 §18
Cheng Bing died of illness in office. At the end of that account, Chen Shou added that while Cheng Bing was tutor, Zheng Chong of Henan, Prefect of the Watches, was likewise said to be devoted to learning and upright in conduct. Records, Wu 8 §19 · 21
This single line is the only place where Zheng Chong appears in Chen Shou's main text; his courtesy name, the years of his birth and death, how he became Prefect of the Watches, and anything else he did are not recorded. The assessment of Volume 8 discusses only Zhang Hong, Yan Jun, Cheng Bing, Kan Ze, Xue Zong and Xue Ying, and does not mention Zheng Chong. Records, Wu 8 §21 · 63
