In the Romance
In Chapter 113 of the Romance, Deng Ai has Sima Wang pin Jiang Wei down with a contest of battle formations while he himself strikes at the rear of the hills, but Jiang Wei sees through the plan. The vanguard Zheng Lun is cut down by the sword of Liao Hua, who has been lying in ambush, and Deng Ai, caught in a pincer attack from both sides as Zhang Yi joins in, is badly defeated. When Deng Ai, struck by four arrows, flees to the camp south of the Wei River, Sima Wang tells him that the Later Sovereign of Shu now dotes on the eunuch Huang Hao and indulges in wine and women day and night, so that if they use a scheme to sow discord and get Jiang Wei recalled, the crisis can be resolved. Romance, Ch. 113 §35 · 39–41
When Deng Ai asks his advisers who can go into Shu and make contact with Huang Hao, before he has finished speaking a man answers that he will go: it is Dang Jun of Xiangyang. Deng Ai, overjoyed, has Dang Jun take gold, pearls and treasures straight to Chengdu to join hands with Huang Hao and spread the rumor that Jiang Wei resents the Son of Heaven and will soon surrender to Wei. Soon everyone in Chengdu is saying the same thing, and when Huang Hao reports it to the throne, the Later Sovereign sends a man riding through the night to recall Jiang Wei to court. Romance, Ch. 113 §41–42
Jiang Wei, not knowing the reason, has no choice but to withdraw his army, and Deng Ai and Sima Wang, knowing that Jiang Wei has fallen into the trap, pursue him. In Chapter 114 Jiang Wei has Liao Hua and Zhang Yi cover the rear and withdraws in good order, and Deng Ai, seeing the Shu army's orderly banners, dares not pursue and goes back to the camp at Qishan. Arriving at Chengdu, Jiang Wei tells the throne that this must be Deng Ai's scheme to sow discord, but the Later Sovereign, saying he does not doubt him, tells him to go back to Hanzhong and wait for some upheaval in Wei, and Jiang Wei leaves for Hanzhong with a sigh. Romance, Ch. 113 §43Romance, Ch. 114 §1–3

Deng Ai tells Sima Wang that since the ruler and his minister are not in harmony there is bound to be an upheaval from within, and at once sends Dang Jun to Luoyang to inform Sima Zhao. Sima Zhao, overjoyed, sets his mind on conquering Shu and asks Jia Chong, the Protector of the Central Army, about it, but Jia Chong says Shu cannot be attacked yet, since the Son of Heaven is just now suspicious of his lord, and if he moves rashly there is sure to be trouble from within.
