Profile

Sun Xian was a man of Wu in the time of Sun Liang. The Records has no separate biography of him, and he appears twice in the record of Sun Liang in the Biographies of the Three Successor Rulers, Records of Wu 3. In the 1st year of Taiping (256), when Sun Jun died and Sun Chen succeeded to his position, Sun Xian went out to Jiangdu with Ding Feng (丁奉), Shi Kuan and others at the head of a naval force to intercept Lü Ju, who had turned his army back to attack Sun Chen. Records, Wu 3 §12–13

In the 11th month of that year Sun Chen became General-in-Chief, and Sun Xian plotted with the general Wang Dun to kill Sun Chen, but the plot was discovered. Sun Chen killed Wang Dun and forced Sun Xian to take his own life. Chen Shou's main text does not record his courtesy name, origin or office. Records, Wu 3 §14

The passage on Sun Chen in Records of Wu 19 does not contain Sun Xian's name; instead it names Sun Lü (孫慮), a younger cousin of Sun Jun, as the man who at the same time intercepted Lü Ju and plotted with Wang Dun to kill Sun Chen. Chen Shou's main text does not make clear whether the two names refer to the same person. He does not appear in the Romance. Records, Wu 19 §80 · 83

In the Records

When Sun Jun died on the dinghai day of the 9th month of the 1st year of Taiping (256), his younger cousin Sun Chen, a Lieutenant General, became Palace Attendant and General of the Martial Guard in command of all forces inside and outside the capital, and Lü Ju and the others, who had gone out to attack Wei, were recalled. Lü Ju, hearing that Sun Chen had replaced Sun Jun, was furious. Lü Ju, Wen Qin, Tang Zi and others submitted a memorial recommending Teng Yin, General of the Guards, as Chancellor, but Sun Chen would not listen, and instead made Teng Yin Grand Marshal and stationed him at Wuchang in place of Lü Dai. Records, Wu 3 §12–13

When Lü Ju tried to bring his army back to attack Sun Chen, Sun Chen sent envoys to instruct Wen Qin, Tang Zi and others by edict to seize Lü Ju. On the dingwei day of the 10th month, in winter, Sun Xian was sent with Ding Feng (丁奉), Shi Kuan and others at the head of a naval force to intercept Lü Ju at Jiangdu, and the general Liu Cheng was sent with infantry and cavalry to attack Teng Yin. Teng Yin's troops were defeated and his clan exterminated, and on the xinhai day Lü Ju was captured at Xinzhou. Records, Wu 3 §13–14

In the 11th month, Sun Chen became General-in-Chief, was granted the credentials, and was enfeoffed as Marquis of Yongkang. Sun Xian plotted with the general Wang Dun to kill Sun Chen, but the plot was discovered; Sun Chen killed Wang Dun and forced Sun Xian to take his own life. In Chen Shou's main text, these two passages in the Biographies of the Three Successor Rulers are the only places where Sun Xian's name appears, and his courtesy name, origin and office are not recorded. Records, Wu 3 §14

The passage on Sun Chen in the Biographies of Zhuge, Teng, the Two Suns and Puyang (Records of Wu 19) does not contain Sun Xian's name. Instead it records that when Sun Chen heard that Lü Ju was coming back, he sent his elder cousin Sun Lü (孫慮) with troops to intercept Lü Ju at Jiangdu. Sun Lü, a younger cousin of Sun Jun, had taken part in the plot to kill Zhuge Ke and so was treated generously by Sun Jun, rising to General of the Right and Wunan Commander; but when Sun Chen treated him less generously than in Sun Jun's time, he was angered and plotted with the general Wang Dun to kill Sun Chen. Sun Chen killed Wang Dun, and Sun Lü took poison and died. Chen Shou's main text does not make clear whether Sun Xian and Sun Lü are the same person. Records, Wu 19 §79–80 · 83

In the assessment of the Biographies of the Three Successor Rulers, Chen Shou said that Sun Liang was a child without worthy ministers to assist him, so that his loss of the throne and failure to reach the end were the inevitable outcome of circumstances. The assessment does not discuss Sun Xian separately. Records, Wu 3 §88
