Profile
Song Bai appears in Chapter 110 of the Romance as the Prefect of Shen County in Wei. In the 2nd year of Zhengyuan (255), when Guanqiu Jian, who has raised troops in Huainan, comes out of Xiangcheng to fight, is defeated by the troops of Deng Ai, Hu Zun and Wang Ji, and arrives below the walls of Shen County with a dozen or so horsemen, Song Bai opens the gate to receive him and sets out a banquet to entertain him. When Guanqiu Jian is thoroughly drunk, Song Bai has men kill him and presents his head to the Wei army, and in this way Huainan is pacified. Romance, Ch. 110 §1 · 24–26
Of the Romance's 120 chapters he appears only in one, Chapter 110, and no chapter has his name in its title. He appears neither in Chen Shou's main text nor in Pei Songzhi's commentary. The biography of Guanqiu Jian in Chen Shou's main text (Records of Wei 28, the Biographies of Wang Ling, Guanqiu Jian, Zhuge Dan, Deng Ai and Zhong Hui) records that when Guanqiu Jian reached Shen County the soldiers around him gradually abandoned him and left, and that while hiding in the grass by the water with his young younger brother Guanqiu Xiu and his grandson Guanqiu Zhong, he was shot dead with an arrow by Zhang Shu, a commoner under the Commandant of Anfeng Ford, and that Zhang Shu was enfeoffed as a marquis for this. In the Romance
In Chapter 110 of the Romance, in the 1st month of the 2nd year of Zhengyuan (255) of Wei, Guanqiu Jian, General Who Guards the East, who commands the troops and horses of Huainan, is enraged to hear that Sima Shi has arbitrarily deposed one emperor and set up another, and raises troops together with the Inspector Wen Qin. Guanqiu Jian leads 60,000 troops and is stationed at Xiangcheng, while Wen Qin, with 20,000 troops, acts as a mobile force outside to support him. Sima Shi sets out in person at the head of a great army. Romance, Ch. 110 §1–4 · 7
On hearing that Sun Jun of Eastern Wu is coming to raid Shouchun, Guanqiu Jian withdraws his troops back to Xiangcheng, and Wen Qin and his son go to Lejia with 5,000 troops. Wen Qin's son Wen Yang bursts into Sima Shi's camp at night, charging left and right, and single-handedly drives off the Wei generals, but Wen Qin loses his way on the mountain roads and emerges only after daybreak, then withdraws without fighting and flees toward Shouchun. Shouchun has already been taken by Zhuge Dan, and when he tries to return to Xiangcheng, the three columns of Hu Zun, Wang Ji and Deng Ai arrive, so Wen Qin goes to place himself under Sun Jun of Eastern Wu. Romance, Ch. 110 §10 · 13 · 16–21 · 24
Inside Xiangcheng, hearing that Shouchun has been lost, that Wen Qin has been defeated, and that three columns have arrived outside the city, Guanqiu Jian leads out all the troops in the city to fight. Meeting Deng Ai, Guanqiu Jian sends out Ge Yong, but Ge Yong is cut down by Deng Ai's blade in less than a single bout, and as Hu Zun and Wang Ji attack from all sides, the troops of the Jiang and Huai fall into great disorder. Unable to hold out, Guanqiu Jian fights his way out with a dozen or so horsemen and flees to the foot of the walls of Shen County, and the Prefect Song Bai opens the gate to receive him and sets out a banquet to entertain him. Romance, Ch. 110 §24–25
When Guanqiu Jian is thoroughly drunk, Song Bai has men kill him and presents his head to the Wei army. The Romance records that in this way Huainan was pacified. Sima Shi, lying ill and unable to rise, promotes Zhuge Dan to Grand General Who Guards the East with command over the troops of all the routes of Yang Province, withdraws his army and returns to Xuchang, and dies in the 2nd month of the 2nd year of Zhengyuan. In the Romance Song Bai's name appears only in these two passages at Shen County. Romance, Ch. 110 §25–28
