In the Romance

Chapter 110 of the Romance opens in the 1st month of the 2nd year of Zhengyuan of Wei (255), with Guanqiu Jian, Area Commander of Yang Province and General Who Guards the East in command of the troops and horses of Huainan, flying into a rage on hearing that Sima Shi had arbitrarily deposed one emperor and enthroned another. Together with the Inspector Wen Qin, Guanqiu Jian falsely claimed a secret edict from the Empress Dowager, raised the troops of Huainan, and stationed himself at Xiangcheng with 60,000 troops. Sima Shi, who had just had the tumour cut from beneath his eye, set out east in person despite his illness, and following the advice of the Army Supervisor Wang Ji, gave him the vanguard troops and had him pitch camp below the walls of Nandun. Romance, Ch. 110 §1–4 · 6 · 8

At Xiangcheng, Guanqiu Jian learned that Sima Shi was coming in person and gathered his followers to discuss it. The vanguard commander Ge Yong said that the land of Nandun, backed by hills and bordered by water, was ideal for stationing troops, and that if the Wei army took it first it would be hard to dislodge them, so they should seize it quickly. Guanqiu Jian agreed and headed for Nandun, only to see that Wei banners already filled the fields and the camps stood in good order. At a loss for a plan, Guanqiu Jian heard a report that Sun Jun of Eastern Wu was leading troops across the Yangtze to raid Shouchun, and withdrew to Xiangcheng that night. Romance, Ch. 110 §9–10

After that, at Lejia, Wen Qin's son Wen Yang single-handedly threw the Wei army into turmoil, but Wen Qin lost his way and failed to join him; Shouchun was taken by Zhuge Dan, and when the three columns of Hu Zun, Wang Ji and Deng Ai reached Xiangcheng, Wen Qin went to seek refuge with Sun Jun of Eastern Wu. Hearing that Shouchun was lost, that Wen Qin had been defeated and that three columns had arrived outside the city, Guanqiu Jian led every soldier in the city out to fight. Romance, Ch. 110 §17–21 · 24

Meeting Deng Ai just then, Guanqiu Jian sent Ge Yong riding out to engage him. Before a single bout was over, however, Ge Yong was cut down by one stroke of Deng Ai's blade, and Deng Ai led his troops in a charge through the enemy line. When Hu Zun and Wang Ji attacked from all sides, Guanqiu Jian fled with a dozen or so horsemen and reached Shen County, where the county magistrate Song Bai welcomed him with a banquet and, once he was thoroughly drunk, had men kill him. Romance, Ch. 110 §25–26
