Profile
Peng He is the man whom Zhuge Zhan at Mianzhu sends to Eastern Wu to ask for relief in Chapter 117 of the Romance. Defeated by Deng Ai's ambush and driven back into Mianzhu, Zhuge Zhan, encircled by the Wei army as tightly as an iron barrel and in desperate straits, has Peng He take a letter, break out through the siege and ask Eastern Wu for relief. Romance, Ch. 117 §41
When Peng He reaches Eastern Wu, has an audience with Sun Xiu, the Lord of Wu, and presents the letter reporting the emergency, Sun Xiu appoints the veteran general Ding Feng (丁奉) as chief commander and Ding Feng (丁封) and Sun Yi as deputy generals, and sends them with 50,000 troops to relieve Shu. When no relief arrives, Zhuge Zhan sallies out and then cuts his own throat. Romance, Ch. 117 §41–44
He appears in only one of the Romance's 120 chapters, Chapter 117, and no chapter has his name in its title. The name Peng He appears neither in Chen Shou's main text nor in Pei Songzhi's commentary. The Biographies of the Three Successor Rulers in Chen Shou's main text records only that in winter, in the 10th month of the 6th year of Yong'an (263), Shu reported that it was under attack by Wei, without naming the person who brought the report. Romance, Ch. 117 §41Records, Wu 3 §43
In the Romance
In Chapter 117 of the Romance, Zhuge Zhan's son Zhuge Shang, alone on his horse with a single spear, fights off Shi Zuan and Deng Zhong, and Zhuge Zhan, driving forward the troops of both wings, inflicts a heavy defeat on the Wei army. When Deng Ai, on the advice of the Army Supervisor Qiu Ben, sends a letter to lure him, promising that if he submits Deng Ai will petition the throne to make him Prince of Langya, Zhuge Zhan flies into a rage, tears up the letter and has the envoy who brought it beheaded. Romance, Ch. 117 §36–39
On Qiu Ben's advice, Deng Ai has Wang Qi, Administrator of Tianshui, and Qian Hong, Administrator of Longxi, lay two forces in ambush behind him, and advances leading his troops in person. When Zhuge Zhan charges straight into the Wei lines and pursues the defeated, fleeing Deng Ai, ambushers pour out from both sides, and the Shu army, heavily defeated, falls back into Mianzhu. As the Wei troops raise a great shout together and encircle Mianzhu as tightly as an iron barrel, Zhuge Zhan has Peng He take a letter, fight his way out and ask Eastern Wu for relief, and Peng He reaches Eastern Wu, has an audience with Sun Xiu, the Lord of Wu, and presents the letter reporting the emergency. Romance, Ch. 117 §40–41
Having read the letter, the Lord of Wu confers with his ministers and, saying that when Shu is in danger he can hardly sit by and watch without coming to its aid, appoints the veteran general Ding Feng (丁奉) as chief commander and Ding Feng (丁封) and Sun Yi as deputy generals, and sends them with 50,000 troops to relieve Shu. Ding Feng (丁奉) gives 20,000 troops to Ding Feng (丁封) and Sun Yi to advance toward Mianzhong, and himself leads 30,000 toward Shouchun. Romance, Ch. 117 §42
But when no relief arrives, Zhuge Zhan, saying that holding out for long is no good plan, leaves his son Zhuge Shang and the Master of Writing Zhang Zun to defend the city, throws open three city gates and sallies out. Trapped by Wei troops closing in from all sides, Zhuge Zhan is struck by an arrow and falls from his horse, then cuts his own throat, and Zhuge Shang too sallies out and dies on the battlefield. The only place in the Romance where Peng He's name appears is this one passage, in which he goes from Mianzhu to Eastern Wu. Romance, Ch. 117 §41 · 43–45
