Profile
Zuo Feng is a Yellow Gate eunuch who appears in the words of Lu Zhi in Chapter 1 of the Romance. The court sends him to Lu Zhi, who is besieging Zhang Jue, to observe how matters stand; Zuo Feng demands a bribe from Lu Zhi and, on being told that the army is short even of provisions and has no money to offer the imperial envoy, harbours a grudge. He goes back and reports that Lu Zhi merely builds his ramparts high and will not fight, letting the army's spirit grow slack, whereupon the court has Dong Zhuo take over command of Lu Zhi's troops and has Lu Zhi brought back to the capital under arrest. Romance, Ch. 1 §43–44
Of the 120 chapters of the Romance his name appears in only one, Chapter 1, and no chapter has his name in its title. The name Zuo Feng is found neither in Chen Shou's main text nor in Pei Songzhi's commentary. Chen Shou's main text records Lu Zhi only as the teacher under whom the First Sovereign (Liu Bei) and Gongsun Zan studied in their youth and as the father of Lu Yu, and does not mention his arrest while campaigning against Zhang Jue. In the Romance
In Chapter 1 of the Romance, Xuande (Liu Bei), together with Guan Yu and Zhang Fei, reaches Yingchuan, meets Huangfu Song and Zhu Jun and conveys Lu Zhi's intentions in full. Huangfu Song says that Zhang Liang and Zhang Bao, their strength exhausted, are sure to go to Guangzong to rely on Zhang Jue, and tells him to go there through the night to help, so Xuande leads his troops back again. Halfway there, a body of troops comes along escorting a prisoner's cart, and the prisoner in the cart is none other than Lu Zhi. Romance, Ch. 1 §42–43
To Xuande, who in great alarm dismounts and asks the reason, Lu Zhi says that he had surrounded Zhang Jue and was about to crush him, but Zhang Jue had used sorcery so that he could not win at once. At that point the court had sent the Yellow Gate eunuch Zuo Feng to observe, and Zuo Feng had demanded a bribe; Lu Zhi had answered that, with the army short even of provisions, where would he find money to offer the imperial envoy? Romance, Ch. 1 §43
Zuo Feng, harbouring a grudge, went back and reported to the court that Lu Zhi merely built his ramparts high and would not fight, letting the army's spirit grow slack. For this reason, Lu Zhi says, the court flew into a rage, sent the General of the Household Dong Zhuo to take over command of his troops, and had him seized and brought back to the capital to answer for his crime. On hearing this, Zhang Fei, enraged, wants to cut down the escorting soldiers and rescue Lu Zhi, but Xuande hastily stops him, saying that the court will have its own fair judgment, and the soldiers close around Lu Zhi and take him away. Romance, Ch. 1 §44
Lord Guan says that since Lu, the General of the Household, has already been seized and another man commands the troops, they had better return to Zhuo Commandery, and Xuande leads his troops north. Before they have gone two days, they see Zhang Jue, who has crushed Dong Zhuo, pursuing on the strength of that victory, and the three spur their horses and charge in, routing Zhang Jue's troops for more than fifty li. Zuo Feng appears only in Lu Zhi's words and never comes on stage in the Romance himself, and his name does not appear again after these two passages of Chapter 1. Romance, Ch. 1 §45–46 · 43–44
