Profile
Pei Jing is a Wei Left Commander who appears in Chapter 106 of the Romance. When Sima Yi has gone to Liaodong to attack Gongsun Yuan and surrounded the city of Xiangping, the autumn rain does not stop for a month, the water stands three chi deep even on level ground and the whole Wei army is in the water; Pei Jing then enters the command tent and asks that, since the camp has turned to mud and the troops cannot stay there, it be moved up onto the hills ahead. Romance, Ch. 106 §13–14
Sima Yi angrily replies that the capture of Gongsun Yuan is a matter of a morning or an evening, so how could he move the camp, and that anyone who speaks again of moving the camp will be beheaded. Pei Jing withdraws saying, 'Yes, yes', and shortly afterwards the Right Commander Qiu Lian, who makes the same request, is beheaded and his head hung outside the camp gate. Romance, Ch. 106 §14–15
Of the 120 chapters of the Romance he appears only in Chapter 106, and no chapter has his name in its title. The Biographies of the Two Gongsuns, Tao and the Four Zhangs in Chen Shou's main text merely record that heavy rain fell for more than thirty days and the Liao River suddenly rose, so that the transport boats could come straight from the mouth of the Liao to below the city walls, and Pei Jing's name appears neither in Chen Shou's main text nor in Pei Songzhi's notes. In the Romance
In Chapter 106 of the Romance, Gongsun Yuan of Liaodong styles himself King of Yan and changes the era name to the 1st year of Shaohan, then, with the General-in-Chief Bei Yan as commander-in-chief and Yang Zuo as vanguard, raises 150,000 troops of Liaodong and marches on the Central Plains. When the Wei ruler Cao Rui summons Sima Yi to discuss a plan, Sima Yi says that the 40,000 government cavalry and infantry under his command are enough to defeat the rebels, and Cao Rui has him raise an army and attack Gongsun Yuan. Romance, Ch. 106 §3 · 5–6 · 8
When Bei Yan and Yang Zuo hold Liaosui with a moat running more than twenty li, Sima Yi leaves them there and takes byroads toward Xiangping. The two, alarmed that Xiangping may be attacked and turning back to follow him, fall into an ambush laid by Xiahou Ba and Xiahou Wei, and when they join Gongsun Yuan's troops at Mount Shou and fight again, Bei Yan is cut down by Xiahou Ba's blade. Gongsun Yuan flees with his defeated troops into the city of Xiangping, shuts the gates and holds fast, and the Wei army surrounds the city on all sides. Romance, Ch. 106 §9 · 11–13
Then the autumn rain falls without pause and does not stop for a month, so that the water stands three chi deep even on level ground, and the boats carrying grain come straight from the mouth of the Liao River to below the walls of Xiangping. The whole Wei army is in the water, and neither walking nor sitting is comfortable. The Left Commander Pei Jing enters the command tent and reports that because the rain will not stop the camp has turned to mud and the troops cannot stay there, and asks that it be moved up onto the hills ahead. Romance, Ch. 106 §14
Sima Yi angrily says that the capture of Gongsun Yuan is a matter of a morning or an evening, so how could he move the camp, and that anyone who speaks again of moving the camp will be beheaded. Pei Jing withdraws saying, 'Yes, yes'. Shortly afterwards, when the Right Commander Qiu Lian comes too and asks that the camp be moved to high ground because the troops are suffering from the water, Sima Yi says that his military order has already been issued, so how does he dare to defy it deliberately, has him dragged out and beheaded, and hangs his head outside the camp gate. At this the troops tremble with fear. Romance, Ch. 106 §14–15
After this Sima Yi pulls the men and horses of the southern camp back twenty li for the time being and lets the troops and people in the city come out to gather firewood and graze their cattle and horses, and when the Marshal Chen Qun asks the reason, he answers that he is leaving them to run away of their own accord. When the city is attacked after the rain stops, Gongsun Yuan, whose grain has run out, asks to surrender and is rebuffed, and when he opens the south gate at night and flees, he is surrounded on all sides and beheaded together with his son Gongsun Xiu on Sima Yi's orders. After this scene in which he asks for the camp to be moved, Pei Jing does not appear again in the Romance. Romance, Ch. 106 §16–17 · 19–26
