Profile

Dong Yu was a man of Hongnong who served as Minister of Agriculture under Emperor Ming of Wei. The Records give him no biography of his own; his name appears once, as a scholar who wrote commentaries on the classics, at the end of the account of Wang Su in Records of Wei 13. Records, Wei 13 §97

Chen Shou wrote that Zhousheng Lie of Dunhuang, a summoned scholar at the beginning of Wei, and Dong Yu of Hongnong, Minister of Agriculture under Emperor Ming, and others also wrote commentaries on the classics and their commentaries at large, and that these were fairly widely transmitted in the world. Chen Shou's main text does not record his life or death separately, and he does not appear in the assessment at the end of Records of Wei 13 either. He does not appear in the Romance. Records, Wei 13 §97 · 99

In the Records

Wang Su disliked the learning of the Zheng school. Gathering the agreements and differences among the various interpretations, he wrote explanations of the Book of Documents, the Odes, the Analects, the Three Ritual Classics and the Zuo Commentary, and edited and settled the commentary on the Changes written by his father Wang Lang, all of which were adopted by the official academies. At this time Sun Shuran of Le'an had studied under Zheng Xuan, and people called him the great Confucian of the eastern provinces. Records, Wei 13 §96

When Wang Su compiled the Evidence from the Sages to disparage Zheng Xuan, Sun Shuran refuted and explained it; he wrote the Zhouyi and the Examples of the Spring and Autumn Annals, and wrote commentaries on various classics. Chen Shou went on to write that Zhousheng Lie of Dunhuang, a summoned scholar at the beginning of Wei, and Dong Yu of Hongnong, Minister of Agriculture under Emperor Ming, and others also wrote commentaries on the classics and their commentaries at large, which were fairly widely transmitted in the world. Records, Wei 13 §97

This one passage is the only place in Chen Shou's main text where Dong Yu's name appears. His courtesy name, his life, which classics he annotated, and the year and cause of his death are not recorded. The assessment at the end of Records of Wei 13 assesses only Zhong Yao, Hua Xin, Wang Lang and Wang Su. Records, Wei 13 §97 · 99
