Profile

Pei Xuan, courtesy name Yanhuang, was a man of Xiapi. In the Records a short biography of him is attached after the biography of Yan Jun in the Biographies of Zhang, Yan, Cheng, Kan and Xue in Records of Wu 8, and Chen Shou wrote that he too had learning and virtuous conduct and that his office reached Grand Palace Grandee. Recorded along with this is his exchange of rebuttals with his son Pei Qin over the relative merits of Duke Huan of Qi, Duke Wen of Jin, Bo Yi and Liuxia Hui. Records, Wu 8 §15–16

His discussion of Guan Zhong and Ji Lu, written together with Yan Jun and Zhang Cheng, was handed down in the world, and when Bu Zhi, answering a letter from the Crown Prince Sun Deng, listed point by point eleven men then holding posts within the borders of Jing Province, he included Pei Xuan. Chen Shou's main text does not record the dates of his birth and death, and he does not appear in the assessment of Records of Wu 8. He does not appear in the Romance. In the Records

Pei Xuan, courtesy name Yanhuang, was a man of Xiapi. Chen Shou wrote about him directly after the biography of Yan Jun, saying that he too had learning and virtuous conduct and that his office reached Grand Palace Grandee. Records, Wu 8 §15–16

Yan Jun wrote a Commentary on the Classic of Filial Piety and a Treatise on Tides, and together with Pei Xuan and Zhang Cheng he also discussed Guan Zhong and Ji Lu. Chen Shou wrote that all of these writings were handed down in the world. Records, Wu 8 §14

Pei Xuan asked his son Pei Qin about the relative merits of four men: Duke Huan of Qi and Duke Wen of Jin, and Bo Yi and Liuxia Hui. Pei Qin answered with his own views and exchanged rebuttals with Pei Xuan, and Chen Shou wrote that each argued with good reason. Pei Qin kept company with the Crown Prince Sun Deng, who praised his literary talent. In the memorial he submitted when facing death, Sun Deng also said, 'Pei Qin has a wide memory, and his literary talent is sufficient for use.' Records, Wu 8 §16Records, Wu 14 §8 · 10

According to the Biography of Bu Zhi in Records of Wu 7, after Sun Quan took the imperial title, the Crown Prince Sun Deng, who was staying at Wuchang, wrote to Bu Zhi, then in command at Xiling, saying that he did not clearly know in what order he ought to treat the gentlemen from far and near. Bu Zhi listed point by point eleven men then holding posts within the borders of Jing Province, namely Zhuge Jin, Lu Xun, Zhu Ran, Cheng Pu, Pan Jun, Pei Xuan, Xiahou Cheng, Wei Jing, Li Su, Zhou Tiao and Shi Gan, distinguishing and setting out their conduct, and then submitted a memorial of encouragement. Chen Shou's main text does not reproduce what Bu Zhi wrote about Pei Xuan's conduct. Records, Wu 7 §74–75

Chen Shou's main text does not record the dates of Pei Xuan's birth and death or when he became Grand Palace Grandee. In his assessment in Records of Wu 8, Chen Shou discussed only Zhang Hong, Yan Jun, Cheng Bing, Kan Ze, Xue Zong and Xue Ying, and did not deal with Pei Xuan. Records, Wu 8 §16 · 63
