Profile

Zhang Hu is a figure who appears in Chapter 7 of the Romance as a general under Huang Zu, who served Liu Biao, and the Romance calls him 'Zhang Hu of Jiangxia'. When Sun Jian crosses the river to attack Liu Biao, and Huang Zu, having lost Fancheng and fallen back to Dengcheng, draws up his lines in the open field, Zhang Hu is one of the two generals he leads out, together with Chen Sheng of Xiangyang. On Huang Zu's order he goes out to offer battle and is killed by Sun Jian's general Han Dang. Romance, Ch. 7 §33–35

Of the Romance's 120 chapters he appears only in Chapter 7, and his name is in no chapter title. He does not appear in Chen Shou's main text and is recorded only in Pei Songzhi's notes. The Biography of Liu Biao in Chen Shou's main text states only that after Emperor Ling died, Liu Biao, who had become Inspector of Jing Province, gathered troops and stationed them at Xiangyang, and that Yuan Shu had Sun Jian attack Liu Biao but Sun Jian was struck by a stray arrow and died; it does not name Zhang Hu. Romance, Ch. 7 §34–35Records, Wei 6 §82–83

In the Romance

In Chapter 7 of the Romance, Yuan Shu, resenting Liu Biao for refusing to lend him 200,000 measures of grain, sends a letter to Sun Jian urging him to attack Liu Biao, and Sun Jian raises troops, saying he will avenge the grudge of the time when Liu Biao cut off his road home. Liu Biao, following Kuai Liang's advice, has Huang Zu make preparations and then raises a great army to follow. Sun Jian boards ship with his eldest son Sun Ce and drives on Fancheng. Romance, Ch. 7 §26–29 · 31

Huang Zu sets crossbowmen in ambush along the riverbank and shoots volleys of arrows every time the ships approach the shore, until after three days his arrows are exhausted. Sun Jian has the more than a hundred thousand arrows lodged in his ships shot back with a favorable wind, and when Cheng Pu and Huang Gai, who have landed, and Han Dang, following behind, attack from three sides, Huang Zu is badly defeated, abandons Fancheng and flees to Dengcheng. When Sun Jian pursues in person, Huang Zu leads his troops out and draws up his lines in the open field. Romance, Ch. 7 §32–33

Huang Zu comes out with two generals, one being Zhang Hu of Jiangxia and the other Chen Sheng of Xiangyang. Huang Zu raises his whip and reviles the enemy as rat-like bandits of Jiangdong who dare to invade the territory of a kinsman of the Han imperial house, and then has Zhang Hu offer battle. Han Dang comes out from Sun Jian's lines to meet him, and the two fight more than twenty bouts; Chen Sheng, seeing that Zhang Hu's strength is failing, gallops out to help him. Romance, Ch. 7 §34

Seeing this, Sun Ce sets down his spear, draws his bow and hits Chen Sheng full in the face, and Chen Sheng falls from his horse at the twang of the bowstring. Zhang Hu, startled to see Chen Sheng fall, is caught unprepared, and with one stroke of Han Dang's blade half his head is sliced away. Huang Zu throws away his helmet and warhorse and flees mingled among the foot soldiers, and Sun Jian pursues the routed troops as far as the Han River. In the Romance, this battle is the only place where Zhang Hu's name appears. Romance, Ch. 7 §35
