Profile

Xiahou De is a figure who appears in the Romance as a general on Cao Cao's side guarding Mount Tiandang in Hanzhong. Xiahou Shang calls him 'my elder brother.' In Chapter 70, when Zhang He, Xiahou Shang and Han Hao, defeated by Huang Zhong, come to him, he tells them that he has 100,000 troops stationed there and that they should retake their original camps, and he gives Han Hao a share of the troops and sends him down the mountain. But while Huang Zhong cuts down Han Hao and fights his way up, flames shoot up behind the mountain, and as he goes to put out the fire he is cut down by Yan Yan, who has been lying in ambush. Romance, Ch. 70 §40–45

He appears in 2 of the Romance's 120 chapters, Chapters 70 and 71, but he is not named in any chapter title. The battle in which he dies corresponds to 'Old Huang Zhong seizes Mount Tiandang by a stratagem' in the title of Chapter 70. In Chapter 71, Zhang He and Xiahou Shang merely report his loss to Xiahou Yuan. Xiahou De does not appear in Chen Shou's main text or in Pei Songzhi's notes. In the Romance

In Chapter 70 of the Romance, when Zhang He is defeated by Huang Zhong yet again, Cao Hong, following Guo Huai's advice, gives 5,000 troops to Xiahou Shang, nephew of Xiahou Dun, and Han Hao, younger brother of the surrendered general Han Xuan, and sends them to help in the fighting. The two generals fight Huang Zhong and take his camps one after another, and when Zhang He remonstrates that Huang Zhong's falling back two days in a row must hide some trick, Xiahou Shang rebukes him as a coward. Zhuge Liang and Huang Zhong call this the old general's stratagem of making the enemy arrogant, and Huang Zhong, leading 5,000 troops down from the pass at the second watch of the night, breaks into the camps of the two slackened generals and by daybreak has taken three camps. Romance, Ch. 70 §30 · 33–38

When Zhang He, having fallen back to the banks of the Han River, discusses how to protect Mount Tiandang, where provisions and fodder are stored, Xiahou Shang says that Mount Micang is guarded by his uncle Xiahou Yuan and Mount Tiandang by 'my elder brother Xiahou De,' and that they should go there and guard this mountain. Xiahou De, hearing what has happened from Zhang He, who has hurried there through the night, tells him that he has 100,000 troops stationed there and that Zhang He should lead them out and retake the original camps, but Zhang He says that they should only hold firm and must not move rashly. Romance, Ch. 70 §39–42

At the report that Huang Zhong's troops have arrived, Xiahou De laughs loudly that the old bandit knows nothing of the art of war and relies only on his courage. To Zhang He, who says that Huang Zhong has strategy, he retorts that the troops of Xichuan have come a long way, are worn out from many days of toil, and have moreover penetrated deep into enemy territory, which itself shows a lack of strategy. When Han Hao says he will attack if lent 3,000 picked troops, Xiahou De at last gives him a share of the troops and sends him down the mountain. Romance, Ch. 70 §42–43

Huang Zhong rejects Liu Feng's suggestion that they rest since the sun has set, presses forward, and cuts down Han Hao in a single bout, and the Shu troops fight their way up the mountain. Just then, with a great shout, flames shoot up to the sky behind the mountain, and Xiahou De, leading his troops to put out the fire, runs into the old general Yan Yan and falls from his horse, cut down by his blade. Following Huang Zhong's plan, Yan Yan had lain in ambush beforehand in a secluded spot in the mountains and set fire to the piled-up heaps of firewood and grass. Unable to look after front and rear, Zhang He and Xiahou Shang abandon Mount Tiandang and flee to Xiahou Yuan at Mount Dingjun. Romance, Ch. 70 §44–46

On hearing of the victory, Liu Bei, at Fa Zheng's urging, decides to attack Hanzhong in person, and the Romance dates this to the 7th month, in the autumn of the 23rd year of Jian'an (218). In Chapter 71, Zhang He and Xiahou Shang report to Xiahou Yuan that Mount Tiandang has been lost and Xiahou De and Han Hao with it, and Cao Cao, hearing the news, raises 400,000 troops and sets out on campaign in person. Romance, Ch. 70 §47–48Romance, Ch. 71 §3–4
