Romance, Ch. 37 §9–10

On Liu Bei's way to visit the Sleeping Dragon for the second time, Shi Guangyuan, drinking with Meng Gongwei at an inn, meets Liu Bei; he introduces himself as Shi Guangyuan of Yingchuan, a friend of the Sleeping Dragon, and declines Liu Bei's request to go along with him. In the Romance

In Chapter 37 of the Romance, after Xu Shu has left, Sima Hui comes to visit Liu Bei. When Liu Bei asks what kind of man Zhuge Liang, whom Xu Shu recommended on leaving, is, Sima Hui answers that Kongming is a close friend of four men: Cui Zhouping of Boling, Shi Guangyuan of Yingchuan, Meng Gongwei of Runan and Xu Yuanzhi. He says that these four devoted themselves to refining their learning to precision and purity, while Kongming alone grasped its broad outline, and that Kongming once, clasping his knees and chanting at length, pointed to the four and said that if they entered official service they could rise to be inspectors or commandery administrators. When Liu Bei asks why Yingchuan has so many worthy men, Sima Hui answers that long ago Yin Kui said that since the stars had gathered in the field of Yingchuan, that land would surely have many worthy scholars. Romance, Ch. 37 §8–10

In the depth of winter, through a snowstorm, Liu Bei goes again with Guan Yu and Zhang Fei to visit Kongming. When they are almost at the thatched cottage, they hear singing from a wayside inn. One man sings that a hero's deeds and fame are not yet achieved, and sings of the old man of the Eastern Sea who became close to King Wen and of the wine-lover of Gaoyang who bowed low to the high-nosed lord of Mangdang; another, beating on the table, sings that in an age when the Fire Virtue has declined and treacherous heroes soar like hawks, it is enough to keep oneself well, and asks what need there is of a name that will not decay for a thousand ages. When they finish singing, the two clap their hands and laugh loudly. Romance, Ch. 37 §26–30

Wondering whether the Sleeping Dragon is here, Liu Bei enters the inn and sees two men leaning on a table and drinking face to face: in the upper seat a man with a pale face and a long beard, and in the lower seat a man of pure, unusual and archaic appearance. When Liu Bei asks which of them is Master Sleeping Dragon, the long-bearded man asks in return what he wants with the Sleeping Dragon, and when Liu Bei says that he seeks the way to save the world and bring peace to the people, the man declares, 'We are not the Sleeping Dragon; we are both friends of the Sleeping Dragon. I am Shi Guangyuan of Yingchuan, and this is Meng Gongwei of Runan.' Romance, Ch. 37 §30–31

When Liu Bei says that he has long heard of their great names and asks them to mount the horses he has brought and go with him to the Sleeping Dragon's farmstead to talk, Shi Guangyuan says, 'We are both idle men of the hills and fields who know nothing of governing the state and bringing peace to the people, so there is no need to ask us,' and tells him to mount quickly and go to find the Sleeping Dragon. Liu Bei takes leave of the two and heads for Wolong Ridge, but Kongming has gone out by appointment with Cui Zhouping, so Liu Bei meets only his younger brother Zhuge Jun and laments that he has twice failed to meet the great worthy. Romance, Ch. 37 §31–32 · 35–36

In Chapter 113, Jiang Wei, after deploying the Eight Formations, changes them into the Long Snake Coiling on the Ground Formation and traps Deng Ai in the middle. Sima Wang, who breaks in from the northwest corner and rescues Deng Ai, answers Deng Ai's question of how he knew this formation by saying, 'When I traveled to study in Jingnan as a youth, I became friends with Cui Zhouping and Shi Guangyuan and once discussed this formation with them,' and says that seeing the head of the formation lay to the northwest, he struck in from that side. This is the last time Shi Guangyuan's name appears in the Romance. Romance, Ch. 113 §32–34
