In the Romance

In Chapter 116 of the Romance, Jiang Wei, in Tazhong, hears that the Wei army is coming in great force and goes out to meet it, but the camps at Gansong are burned down by Yang Xin, Administrator of Jincheng, and while he goes to save Gansong the Shu troops are routed by Deng Ai, and Jiang Wei is surrounded by the main body of the Wei army. Having broken through the layers of encirclement and entered his main camp to await reinforcements, Jiang Wei receives a courier's report that Zhong Hui has broken through Yang'an Pass and Hanzhong has already passed to Wei, and he breaks camp. Romance, Ch. 116 §34 · 36–38

That night at Qiangchuankou, Jiang Wei meets Yang Xin and pursues him, at one point being thrown to the ground when his warhorse stumbles on its forelegs; when Deng Ai's troops come up behind him, he gathers his troops and tries to retake Hanzhong. But a report comes in that Zhuge Xu, Inspector of Yong Province, has already cut off the way back, and Jiang Wei makes camp relying on the steep mountains. The Wei army is encamped at the head of the Yinping bridge. Romance, Ch. 116 §39–40

When Jiang Wei, with no road forward and no road back, heaves a long sigh, 'Heaven is destroying me!', his lieutenant Ning Sui speaks up. Although the Wei army has cut off the head of the Yinping bridge, he says, Yong Province is sure to have few troops; if they make as if to take Yong Province directly by way of the Konghan Valley, Zhuge Xu will certainly pull his troops out of Yinping to go and save Yong Province, and if they then turn instead and lead the troops to race to Jiange and hold it, Hanzhong can be recovered. Jiang Wei follows his advice, at once sends out his troops into the Konghan Valley and pretends to attack Yong Province. Romance, Ch. 116 §41

Zhuge Xu, receiving his spies' report, is greatly alarmed, saying that Yong Province is the land he is bound to defend and that if anything goes wrong the court will surely hold him guilty; he hurriedly pulls in his main army and goes by the southern road to save Yong Province, leaving only one detachment to guard the bridgehead. Jiang Wei, who has gone about 30 li along the northern road, judges that the Wei army will have left and turns his troops around, scatters the few troops guarding the bridge in a single charge, and burns all their camps and palisades. Zhuge Xu comes back on hearing that fire has broken out, but half a day has passed since Jiang Wei's troops went through, and he dares not pursue. Ning Sui's name does not appear again in the Romance after this. Romance, Ch. 116 §42–43
