Profile
Luo Xian was a man of Xiangyang who was Army Commander of Badong at the end of Shu. He has no biography of his own in the Records; his name appears at the end of the biography of Huo Yi in Records of Shu 11 and in the Biographies of the Three Successor Rulers in Records of Wu 3. Chen Shou's main text does not record his courtesy name or the years of his birth and death. Records, Shu 11 §8Records, Wu 3 §45–46
When Shu was annexed by Wei in the 6th year of Jingyao (263), he and Huo Yi each kept a region intact and then submitted to Wei with it, and he kept his former post. The following year Lu Kang and others of Wu besieged him while he was guarding Badong, but when Wei sent Hu Lie to attack Xiling and relieve him, Lu Kang and the others withdrew their troops. Records, Shu 11 §7–8Records, Wu 3 §45–46
The assessment Chen Shou appended to the end of Records of Shu 11 does not mention Luo Xian. He does not appear in the Romance. Records, Shu 11 §50
In the Records
According to the biography of Huo Yi, after putting down the Yi and Liao of Yongchang Commandery, Huo Yi, as Army Supervisor and General Who Assists the Army and concurrently Administrator of Jianning, returned to oversee the affairs of the southern commanderies, and in the 6th year of Jingyao (263) his title was raised to General Who Pacifies the South. That year, when Shu was annexed by Wei, Huo Yi, together with Luo Xian, a man of Xiangyang and Army Commander of Badong, each kept a region intact and then submitted to Wei with it. Both therefore kept their former posts, and the favor and treatment they received were increased. Records, Shu 11 §7–8
According to the Biographies of the Three Successor Rulers of Wu, when Shu reported in the winter, in the 10th month of the 6th year of Yong'an (263), that it was under attack by Wei, Wu sought to rescue Shu, sending the General-in-Chief Ding Feng with the various armies toward Wei's Shouchun and the general Liu Ping to Shi Ji in Nan Commandery to discuss where to direct the troops. But when news arrived that Liu Shan, the ruler of Shu, had surrendered to Wei, it stopped. Records, Wu 3 §43–44
In the 2nd month of the 7th year of Yong'an (264), the General Who Guards the Army Lu Kang, the General Who Pacifies the Army Bu Xie, the General Who Conquers the West Liu Ping and the Administrator of Jianping Sheng Man led troops to besiege Luo Xian, the commander guarding Badong for Shu. The Biographies of the Three Successor Rulers record, among the events of the autumn, in the 7th month of that year, that Wei gave the general Hu Lie 20,000 infantry and cavalry to invade Xiling and relieve Luo Xian, and that Lu Kang and the others withdrew with their troops. Even at this point the Biographies of the Three Successor Rulers call him 'the commander guarding Badong for Shu.' Records, Wu 3 §45–46
Chen Shou's main text does not record Luo Xian's courtesy name or the years of his birth and death. The assessment of Records of Shu 11 speaks only of Huo Jun, Wang Lian, Xiang Lang, Zhang Yi (張裔), Yang Hong and Fei Shi, and does not mention Luo Xian. Records, Shu 11 §8 · 50
