Profile

Liu Mi is the Prefect of Fancheng who appears in Chapter 36 of the Romance. The Romance describes him as a man of Changsha who was likewise a kinsman of the Han imperial house, and when Xuande, having driven off Cao Ren, enters Fancheng, he comes out to welcome him, invites him to his home and holds a banquet for him. Romance, Ch. 36 §10–11

When Xuande, taking a liking to Liu Mi's nephew Kou Feng, who stands in attendance at his side, wishes to adopt him as his son, Liu Mi gladly consents, and Kou Feng bows to Xuande as his father and changes his name to Liu Feng. Romance, Ch. 36 §11–12

Of the 120 chapters of the Romance he appears only in Chapter 36, and no chapter has his name in its title. The Biography of Liu Feng in Chen Shou's main text states that Liu Feng was originally the son of the Marquis of Luo of the Kou clan and a nephew of the Liu clan of Changsha, but it does not say who that Liu of Changsha was. The name Liu Mi appears neither in Chen Shou's main text nor in Pei Songzhi's commentary. Romance, Ch. 36 §11Records, Shu 10 §2

In the Romance

In Chapter 36 of the Romance, Shan Fu, seeing a fierce wind rise, foresees that Cao Ren will come that night to raid the camp and divides his troops in advance. Cao Ren, approaching the camp at the second watch, sees fire rising on all sides and withdraws, but, pursued by Zhao Yun and Zhang Fei, he crosses the river and races to Fancheng, only for Guan Yunchang, who has already taken Fancheng, to come out from the city with his troops. Losing a good many more men and horses, Cao Ren heads for Xuchang through the night. Romance, Ch. 36 §8–10

When Xuande, having won a great victory, leads his troops into Fancheng, the Prefect Liu Mi comes out to welcome him. Liu Mi, a man of Changsha who was likewise a kinsman of the Han imperial house, invites Xuande, once he has finished settling the people, to his home and entertains him with a banquet. When Xuande, seeing the imposing bearing of a man standing in attendance at the side, asks who he is, Liu Mi answers that he is his nephew Kou Feng, originally the son of the Marquis of Luo of the Kou clan, who has come to depend on him since both his parents died. Romance, Ch. 36 §11

When Xuande, fond of Kou Feng, wishes to adopt him as his son and heir, Liu Mi gladly consents, and Kou Feng bows to Xuande as his father and changes his name to Liu Feng. When Xuande takes him back and has him bow to Yunchang and Yide as his uncles, Yunchang asks why his elder brother, who already has a son, should insist on adopting one, and says that it will surely bring trouble later. When Xuande answers that if he treats the young man as a son, he will surely serve him as a father, Yunchang is displeased. After consulting Shan Fu, Xuande gives Zhao Yun a thousand troops to hold Fancheng and returns to Xinye. In the Romance, Liu Mi's name appears only in these two passages of Chapter 36. Romance, Ch. 36 §11 · 12
