In the Records
In the 1st year of Yuanxing (264), the year Sun Hao took the throne, Emperor Wen of Jin (Sima Zhao), who had become Chancellor of State of Wei, sent Xu Shao and Sun Yu (孫彧), Wu generals who had earlier surrendered at the city of Shouchun, under his orders with a letter, to set out the state of affairs and the balance of advantage and admonish Sun Hao. Records, Wu 3 §50–51
In the 3rd month of the 1st year of Ganlu (265), Sun Hao sent envoys along with Xu Shao and Sun Yu and delivered a reply. The reply said that he knew that the addressee, with talents surpassing his age, held the office of chief minister and that his work of gradual guidance had been diligent and thorough; that he himself, though lacking in virtue, had succeeded to the line of rule and wished to rescue the ways of the world together with the worthy and able, but, being blocked and cut off, had had no means of making contact; and it concluded that he was now sending the Grand Master of Splendid Happiness Ji Zhi and the General of the Household for the Five Offices Hong Qiu to make his sincere intentions clear. Xu Shao, on his way, was recalled when he reached Ruxu and put to death, because someone had reported that he had praised the Central States. Records, Wu 3 §52–53
The Annals of the Three Young Emperors of Wei record that in the 4th month, in summer, of the 2nd year of Xianxi (265) Wu sent the envoys Ji Zhi and Hong Qiu to ask for peace. An edict of the 5th month said that Wu had sent envoys and presented tribute to show its submission, but that the Chancellor of State, the King of Jin, out of modesty had entered everything he received in a register and sent it on; it ordered that all that Sun Hao had presented be returned to the King of Jin, but when the King firmly declined, the matter was dropped. Records, Wei 4 §145–147
In the 8th month, in autumn, of that year the Chancellor of State, the King of Jin, died. The Biographies of the Three Successor Rulers of Wu record that when Ji Zhi and Hong Qiu reached Luoyang, Emperor Wen of Jin had just died, so they were sent back only in the 11th month. In the meantime, in the 9th month, Sun Hao moved the capital to Wuchang following a memorial from Bu Chan, Area Commander of Xiling, and in the 12th month Jin received the abdication. Records, Wei 4 §148Records, Wu 3 §54
