Profile

Guanqiu Dian was the son of Guanqiu Jian, General Who Guards the East of Wei, and served as Attendant Secretary Who Handles Documents. The Records has no separate biography of him, only a single passage in the biography of his father Guanqiu Jian. When Guanqiu Jian raised troops together with Wen Qin in the 2nd year of Zhengyuan (255), Guanqiu Dian, who had known beforehand that his father's plot was about to break out, slipped away in secret and fled with his family up Mount Ling in Xin'an. The court sent a separate force that attacked and took the place, and Guanqiu Jian's three sets of kin were exterminated. Records, Wei 28 §19–21 · 25

In his assessment Chen Shou called Guanqiu Jian outstanding in talent and insight, yet wrote that, together with Wang Ling, Zhuge Dan and Zhong Hui, he failed to foresee calamity, so that their clans were crushed into the earth. In the Romance Guanqiu Dian appears in only 1 of the 120 chapters, Chapter 110. It is a single scene in which, as Guanqiu Jian's eldest son, he urges his father, angered by Sima Shi's deposing of the emperor, to raise troops, asking how he could calmly keep to his own post. No chapter title bears his name. Records, Wei 28 §140Romance, Ch. 110 §1

In the Records

His father Guanqiu Jian, courtesy name Zhonggong, was a native of Wenxi County in Hedong Commandery. During the Qinglong era he became Inspector of You Province and fought Gongsun Yuan of Liaodong; during the Zhengshi era he attacked Goguryeo; and later he became General Who Guards the East and commanded Yang Province. Records, Wei 28 §12 · 14–16 · 19

In the 1st month of the 2nd year of Zhengyuan (255), when a comet several dozen zhang long stretched across the sky to the northwest, Guanqiu Jian and Wen Qin, Inspector of Yang Province, took it as an auspicious omen for themselves. The two forged an edict of the Empress Dowager, circulated an indictment of the General-in-Chief Sima Shi to the commanderies and kingdoms, and raised troops in rebellion. They made the officials and people of Huainan enter the city of Shouchun, built an altar west of the city and swore an oath, and then crossed the Huai with 50,000 or 60,000 men and reached Xiang County. Records, Wei 28 §20–21

When Sima Shi set out to suppress them at the head of the armies of the capital and the provinces, the officers and men of Huainan, whose families were in the north, surrendered one after another. When Wen Qin was badly defeated at Lejia and fled, Guanqiu Jian also fled by night, and on reaching Shen County he was killed by an arrow from Zhang Shu, a commoner under the Chief Commandant of Anfengjin. Guanqiu Jian's young brother Guanqiu Xiu and his grandson Guanqiu Zhong fled to Wu. Records, Wei 28 §22–24

Guanqiu Dian was then Attendant Secretary Who Handles Documents. Having known beforehand that Guanqiu Jian's plot was about to break out, he slipped away in secret and fled with his family up Mount Ling in Xin'an. A separate force was sent that attacked and took the place, and Guanqiu Jian's three sets of kin were exterminated. Chen Shou's main text does not record separately what became of Guanqiu Dian himself. Records, Wei 28 §25

In the assessment at the end of the volume, Chen Shou called Guanqiu Jian outstanding in talent and insight. He went on to say that Wang Ling, Guanqiu Jian, Zhuge Dan and Zhong Hui all made their names and rose to honored posts, but that their ambitions were great while their aims went astray and they failed to foresee calamity; their revolts sprang like a released crossbow and their clans were crushed into the earth — was this not error and delusion? In the Romance

Chapter 110 of the Romance opens in the 1st month of the 2nd year of Zhengyuan of Wei, with Guanqiu Jian, Commander of Yang Province and General Who Guards the East, flying into a rage inwardly on hearing that Sima Shi has high-handedly deposed one emperor and enthroned another. His eldest son Guanqiu Dian says that his father holds office in charge of a region, and that with Sima Shi seizing power and deposing the sovereign, the state is in peril like a stack of eggs; how could he calmly keep to his own post? Saying, 'My son is right,' Guanqiu Jian summons the Inspector Wen Qin to confer. Romance, Ch. 110 §1–2

Guanqiu Jian and Wen Qin falsely claim to have a secret edict from the Empress Dowager, gather the officials, officers and soldiers of Huainan in the city of Shouchun, build an altar west of the city, and swear an oath smearing their lips with the blood of a white horse. Guanqiu Jian stations himself at Xiangcheng with 60,000 troops, but when Wen Qin is defeated and Shouchun is lost, he flees to Shen County, where, thoroughly drunk, he is killed by men sent by the county magistrate Song Bai. Guanqiu Dian does not appear again after the opening scene, and what became of him is not recorded. Romance, Ch. 110 §3–4 · 24–26
