In the Romance

In Chapter 120 of the Romance, the Jin army wins at Niuzhu and pushes deep into Wu territory. When Jia Chong, who wants the army recalled, rebukes Zhang Hua for opposing him, Sima Yan, ruler of Jin, says that this is his own will, and on receiving a memorial from Du Yu urging that the army advance quickly, he issues the order to advance. Wang Jun and the others advance together by water and land, and the people of Wu surrender at the mere sight of their banners; to the greatly alarmed Sun Hao his ministers declare that the calamity of the day is all Cen Hun's fault, and that if he is put to death they will go out of the city and fight to the death. Romance, Ch. 120 §49–51

Without even waiting for the Wu ruler's command, the ministers rush into the palace, hack Cen Hun to pieces and eat his flesh raw. When Tao Jun says that with 20,000 men fighting from large ships he could easily defeat the enemy, Sun Hao assigns various units of the Imperial Guard to Tao Jun to go out upstream and meet the enemy, while Zhang Xiang, General of the Front, leads the naval forces down the river to meet the enemy. Just as the two set out, a great northwest wind unexpectedly springs up, and not one of the Wu army's banners can stand; all topple over inside the boats. The soldiers refuse to board the boats and scatter in all directions, and only a few dozen of Zhang Xiang's men wait for the enemy. Romance, Ch. 120 §52–53

When a boatman says that the wind and waves are too fierce and they should wait for the wind to die down, Wang Jun draws his sword and rebukes him, declaring that he means to take the Stone City at once, and advances in force to the beating of drums. When the Wu general Zhang Xiang leads his men to ask for surrender, Wang Jun tells him that if his surrender is genuine he should serve in the vanguard and earn merit. Zhang Xiang returns to his own boat, goes straight to the foot of the Stone City, calls for the gates to be opened, and lets the Jin troops in. Hearing that the Jin troops have already entered the city, Sun Hao is about to cut his own throat, but on the advice of Hu Chong, Prefect of the Palace Writers, and Xue Ying, Superintendent of the Imperial Household, he carries his coffin in a cart, binds himself, goes before Wang Jun's camp and surrenders. Zhang Xiang's name does not appear again in the Romance after this. Romance, Ch. 120 §54–55
