Profile

Fa Zhen was the grandfather of Fa Zheng of Shu Han. He has no biography of his own in the Records; in Chen Shou's main text he appears once, as Fa Zheng's grandfather, at the beginning of the Biographies of Pang Tong and Fa Zheng in Records of Shu 7. Chen Shou wrote that he had pure integrity and a high reputation. Records, Shu 7 §14

In the Romance his name appears only in Chapter 60, a single chapter, and he is not named in any chapter title. In the passage where Zhang Song returns to Yi Province and meets his friend Fa Zheng, the Romance introduces Fa Zheng as 'the son of the worthy scholar Fa Zhen'. Romance, Ch. 60 §35–36

In the Records

In introducing Fa Zheng, the Biographies of Pang Tong and Fa Zheng record that his courtesy name was Xiaozhi, that he was a man of Mei County in Fufeng, and that his grandfather Fa Zhen had pure integrity and a high reputation. They go on to record that early in the Jian'an era, when famine struck the realm, Fa Zheng entered Shu together with Meng Da of the same commandery and placed himself under Liu Zhang. Records, Shu 7 §14

This single line is the only place in Chen Shou's main text where Fa Zhen appears. His courtesy name, his offices, his deeds and the time of his death are not recorded. Records, Shu 7 §13–34

In the Romance

In Chapter 60 of the Romance, Zhang Song presented Liu Bei with a map of Xichuan and named two friends as close as his own heart, Fa Zheng and Meng Da, and on returning to Yi Province he first met his friend Fa Zheng. Here the Romance introduces Fa Zheng as 'styled Xiaozhi, a man of Mei County in Right Fufeng, and the son of the worthy scholar Fa Zhen'. Fa Zhen's own deeds do not appear in the Romance. Romance, Ch. 60 §34–36

Where the Romance differs

Relation to Fa Zheng: Chapter 60 of the Romance introduces Fa Zheng as the 'son' of the worthy scholar Fa Zhen. The Biographies of Pang Tong and Fa Zheng in the Records record Fa Zhen as Fa Zheng's 'grandfather'. Romance, Ch. 60 §36Records, Shu 7 §14

What is said of Fa Zhen: Chapter 60 of the Romance only calls Fa Zhen 'a worthy scholar'. The Records state that he had pure integrity and a high reputation. Neither book records his deeds. Romance, Ch. 60 §36Records, Shu 7 §13–34
