Zhou Zhi 周旨

In Chapter 120 of the Romance, the ruler of Jin makes Du Yu, Grand General Who Guards the South, Grand Commander and sends him with 100,000 troops toward Jiangling, and has Wang Jun and Tang Bin launch their ships on the river and sail east downstream. Hearing this, Sun Hao, the ruler of Wu, following the advice of the Chancellor Zhang Ti, makes Wu Yan, General of Chariots and Cavalry, Commander-in-Chief to meet Du Yu at Jiangling, has Sun Xin, General of Agile Cavalry, hold off the forces at Xiakou and elsewhere, and has Zhang Ti lead Shen Ying, General of the Left, and Zhuge Jing, General of the Right, out to Niuzhu. Romance, Ch. 120 §33–36

Having advanced to Jiangling, Du Yu has his Headquarters Officer Zhou Zhi take 800 sailors secretly across the Yangtze in small boats to make a night raid on Lexiang, setting up many banners throughout the hills and woods, firing cannon and beating drums by day and raising fires everywhere by night. Receiving the order, Zhou Zhi leads his men across the river and lies in ambush on Mount Ba. The next day, as Du Yu advances by water and land together, a report comes in that the ruler of Wu has sent Wu Yan by land and Lu Jing by water, with Sun Xin as vanguard, to meet them along three routes. Romance, Ch. 120 §38

Sun Xin's ships arrive first, and as soon as the two forces clash, Du Yu falls back; Sun Xin goes ashore in pursuit, but before he has gone even 20 li he is badly defeated by Jin troops closing in from all sides. When Sun Xin flees back near the city, Zhou Zhi's 800 men slip in among his troops and raise fires on the city walls. Greatly alarmed, Sun Xin asks whether the troops from the north have flown across the river, and as he hastily tries to retreat, he is cut down from his horse at a single great shout from Zhou Zhi. Lu Jing, on his ship, sees a great banner reading 'Jin's Grand General Who Guards the South, Du Yu' fluttering on Mount Ba and tries to escape ashore, but is cut down by the Jin general Zhang Shang; Wu Yan too abandons the city and flees, but is captured and beheaded, and Du Yu takes Jiangling. Romance, Ch. 120 §39–41

As Wang Jun's naval force comes down the river, pulling up the iron spikes in the water with rafts and burning through the iron chains with torches, Zhuge Jing, hearing a report that the Jin army cannot be withstood, urges Zhang Ti to flee. Zhang Ti weeps, asking whether it would not be a disgrace if sovereign and ministers all surrendered and not a single man died in the nation's calamity, and Zhuge Jing too leaves in tears. When Zhang Ti and Shen Ying lead their troops to resist and are surrounded by the Jin army, Zhou Zhi is the first to break into the Wu camp; Zhang Ti dies amid the confused fighting, and Shen Ying is killed by Zhou Zhi. Zhou Zhi's name does not appear again in the Romance after this. Romance, Ch. 120 §44–47
