Profile

Zhao Ang was a fellow townsman of Yang Fu. The Records give him no biography of his own, and his name appears once, in the account of Yang Fu in Records of Wei 25, the Biographies of Xin Pi, Yang Fu and Gaotang Long. After Ma Chao entered the city of Ji and had Yang Ang kill the Inspector and the Administrator, Yang Fu settled on a plan with Jiang Xu to attack Ma Chao, formed a conspiracy with his fellow townsmen Jiang Yin, Zhao Ang, Yin Feng, Yao Qiong, Kong Xin and others, and fixed a pact to attack Ma Chao. Records, Wei 25 §28 · 30

The Biography of Yang Fu goes on to record that in the 9th month of the 17th year of Jian'an (212) Yang Fu raised troops at Lucheng together with Jiang Xu and that Ma Chao in the end fled south to Zhang Lu, but it does not record separately what Zhao Ang did. Records, Wei 25 §31–32

In the Romance he appears only in Chapter 64, as Colonel Commanding Troops, and his name is not in that chapter's title, 'Yang Fu Borrows Troops to Defeat Ma Chao'. His son Zhao Yue was a junior general under Ma Chao, but after listening to his wife, Lady Wang, he makes up his mind, camps at Qishan with Yin Feng and strikes Ma Chao from behind. Ma Chao beheads Zhao Yue and kills all the old and young of Yin Feng's and Zhao Ang's households. Romance, Ch. 64 §39–42 · 45

In the Records

After his defeat in the fighting at Weinan, Ma Chao led the chieftains of the various Rong tribes to attack the commanderies and counties of Longshang. The commanderies and counties of Longshang all went over to him; only the city of Ji held firm in support of the provincial and commandery heads, but from the 1st month to the 8th month no relief army came. The Inspector and the Administrator in the end opened the city gates and admitted Ma Chao, and Ma Chao had Yang Ang kill the Inspector and the Administrator. Records, Wei 25 §26–28

On the pretext of burying his wife, Yang Fu obtained leave and visited his cousin Jiang Xu, who was stationed at Licheng, and Jiang Xu's mother, and took Jiang Xu to task for not attacking Ma Chao. Jiang Xu's mother indignantly ordered Jiang Xu to follow Yang Fu's plan. Once the plan was settled, outside the city they formed a conspiracy with their fellow townsmen Jiang Yin, Zhao Ang, Yin Feng, Yao Qiong and Kong Xin and with Li Jun and Wang Ling of Wudu, and fixed a pact to attack Ma Chao; Yang Fu sent his younger cousin Yang Mo to Ji to inform Yang Yue, and also allied himself with Liang Kuan of Anding and with Zhao Qu, Pang Gong and others of Nan'an. In Chen Shou's main text Zhao Ang's name appears only in this one place. Records, Wei 25 §29–30

Once the covenant was settled, in the 9th month of the 17th year of Jian'an (212), Yang Fu raised troops at Lucheng together with Jiang Xu. When Ma Chao came out leading his troops in person, Zhao Qu, Liang Kuan and others released Yang Yue, shut the gates of Ji and attacked Ma Chao's wife and children. Ma Chao raided Licheng, seized Jiang Xu's mother and killed her, and after fighting Yang Fu fled south to Zhang Lu. The Biography of Yang Fu does not record separately what Zhao Ang did in this fighting. Records, Wei 25 §31–32

When Longyou was pacified, Taizu (Cao Cao) rewarded the feat of attacking Ma Chao by making eleven men marquises and granting Yang Fu the rank of Marquis Within the Passes. Chen Shou's main text does not record Zhao Ang's courtesy name or office, nor his later deeds and death. Records, Wei 25 §33

In the Romance

In Chapter 64 of the Romance, when Xiahou Yuan's relief fails to come, Wei Kang, Inspector at the city of Ji, surrenders to Ma Chao, but Ma Chao, saying the surrender is not sincere, beheads all of Wei Kang's household, more than forty people. Yang Fu, who has again become Ma Chao's Army Adviser, obtains leave on the pretext of burying his wife, visits Jiang Xu at Licheng and proposes that they attack Ma Chao, and Jiang Xu then confers with Yin Feng and Zhao Ang, Colonels Commanding Troops. Romance, Ch. 64 §33–34 · 36 · 39

Zhao Ang's son Zhao Yue is at this time serving under Ma Chao as a junior general. Zhao Ang agrees that day, returns home and asks his wife, Lady Wang, what to do: he has agreed with Jiang Xu, Yang Fu and Yin Feng to avenge Wei Kang, but if they raise troops Ma Chao is sure to kill their son first. Lady Wang says, 'To wash away the great shame of one's lord and father, one should not begrudge even one's own life, let alone a single son', and declares that if he holds back out of concern for their son, she will die first. Zhao Ang then makes up his mind. Romance, Ch. 64 §39–40

The next day they raise troops together; Jiang Xu and Yang Fu are stationed at Licheng and Yin Feng and Zhao Ang at Qishan, and Lady Wang takes all her hair ornaments, valuables and silks to the camp at Qishan and rewards the soldiers. Hearing that Jiang Xu and Yang Fu have joined forces with Yin Feng and Zhao Ang to rise against him, Ma Chao, in great anger, at once beheads Zhao Yue and has Pang De and Ma Dai charge toward Licheng. Romance, Ch. 64 §40–41

Jiang Xu and Yang Fu are defeated and flee, and as Ma Chao pursues them, Yin Feng and Zhao Ang charge in from behind and catch him between them; when Xiahou Yuan's main army also bursts in, Ma Chao is badly defeated and flees. Unable even to enter the city of Ji, Ma Chao fights a bout with Jiang Xu and Yang Fu and then another with Yin Feng and Zhao Ang, after which he enters Licheng and massacres its people. The old and young of Yin Feng's and Zhao Ang's households are also all killed by Ma Chao, but Zhao Ang's wife, Lady Wang, escapes harm because she is in the camp. Romance, Ch. 64 §41–45
