In the Romance
In Chapter 64 of the Romance, Ma Chao, having allied with the Qiang and seized the provinces and commanderies of Longxi, beheads all forty-odd members of the household of Wei Kang, the Inspector at Jicheng, who has surrendered to him. Yang Fu obtains leave on the pretext of burying his wife and goes to see Jiang Xu at Licheng, and when Jiang Xu's mother urges them to act, Jiang Xu consults the Colonel Commanding Troops Yin Feng and Zhao Ang. Zhao Ang's son Zhao Yue was at that time serving under Ma Chao as a subordinate general. Romance, Ch. 64 §33–34 · 36 · 38–39
Having agreed that day, Zhao Ang returns home and tells his wife Lady Wang that he has resolved with Jiang Xu, Yang Fu and Yin Feng to avenge Wei Kang, but that if they raise troops Ma Chao will surely kill their son Zhao Yue first, and asks what he should do. Raising her voice, Lady Wang says that to wipe out the great shame of one's lord and father one should not begrudge even one's own life, let alone a single son, and that if he holds back out of concern for their son, she will die first. Zhao Ang then makes up his mind. Romance, Ch. 64 §39–40
The next day they raise troops together, Jiang Xu and Yang Fu stationing themselves at Licheng and Yin Feng and Zhao Ang at Mount Qi. Lady Wang takes all her own hair ornaments, valuables and silks and goes in person to the army camp at Mount Qi, where she rewards and comforts the soldiers and encourages the troops. Hearing of the uprising, Ma Chao flies into a rage and at once beheads Zhao Yue. Romance, Ch. 64 §40–41
Defeated in battle and shut out of Jicheng as well, Ma Chao enters Licheng, slaughters the people of the city and kills Jiang Xu's mother, and also kills all the members of Yin Feng's and Zhao Ang's households, old and young.
