Profile

Xun Wei was a man of Henei. He has no biography of his own in the Records; in Chen Shou's text his name is listed among men of literary talent at the end of the account of Wang Can in the Biographies of Wang, Wei, the Two Lius and Fu in Records of Wei 21, and he appears once each in the accounts of Chang Lin and Yang Jun in the Biographies of He, Chang, Yang, Du, Zhao and Pei in volume 23. Records, Wei 21 §24Records, Wei 23 §21 · 32

When Liang Xi, Inspector of Bing Province, recommended him as a noted scholar of the province, Cao Cao made him a county chief. In the 3rd year of Huangchu (222), as an Attendant-in-Ordinary, he joined Sima Yi and Wang Xiang (王象) in pleading for Yang Jun, who had been arrested by Emperor Wen, knocking their heads on the ground until they bled, but the emperor did not grant it. Records, Wei 23 §21 · 32

Chen Shou's text does not record his courtesy name or his death, and Chen Shou did not single out Xun Wei in his assessment for volume 21 either. He does not appear in the Romance. Records, Wei 21 §24 · 99

In the Records

Gao Gan, Inspector of Bing Province, wished to make Chang Lin Chief Commandant of Cavalry, but Chang Lin did not accept. Later the Inspector Liang Xi recommended Chang Lin, Yang Jun, Wang Ling, Wang Xiang (王象) and Xun Wei as noted scholars of the province, and Cao Cao made them all county chiefs. Chen Shou's text does not record which county Xun Wei was given. Records, Wei 23 §21

When Emperor Wen was General of the Household for All Purposes, he and Cao Zhi, Marquis of Pingyuan, both loved literature, and Wang Can, together with Xu Gan, Chen Lin, Ruan Yu, Ying Chang and Liu Zhen, was treated by them with the intimacy of a friend. After recording these men, Chen Shou wrote that besides them Handan Chun and Fan Qin of Yingchuan, Lu Cui of Chenliu, Ding Yi (丁儀) and Ding Yi (丁廙) of Pei, Yang Xiu of Hongnong, Xun Wei of Henei and others also had literary talent, but were not counted among these seven men. Records, Wei 21 §9 · 24

In the 3rd year of Huangchu (222), when the imperial carriage reached Wan County, the emperor was angered that the markets were not prosperous and flourishing and had Yang Jun arrested. The Supervisor of the Masters of Writing Sima Yi and the Attendants-in-Ordinary Wang Xiang and Xun Wei pleaded for Yang Jun, knocking their heads on the ground until they bled, but the emperor did not grant it. Yang Jun said, 'I know my offense,' and then killed himself, and everyone grieved at the injustice of it. Records, Wei 23 §32

These three passages are the only places in Chen Shou's text where Xun Wei appears, and his courtesy name and death are not recorded. In his assessment for volume 21, Chen Shou said only that men of talent came forth together around Emperor Wen and the Prince of Chen, and that among them Wang Can and the others, six men, were the most renowned; he did not single out Xun Wei.
