Profile

Xue Ze is a Wei general who appears in Chapter 92 of the Romance. When the imperial son-in-law Xiahou Mao, who has come out to resist Zhuge Liang, is defeated again and again by Zhao Yun before Mount Fengming, the Army Adviser Cheng Wu proposes setting troops in ambush on both sides to lure Zhao Yun in and surround him. Following his advice, Xiahou Mao has Dong Xi and Xue Ze each lie in ambush, on the left and on the right, at the head of 30,000 troops. Romance, Ch. 92 §1 · 12–15

The next day, when Xiahou Mao falls back first and draws Zhao Yun deep into enemy ground, Xue Ze and Dong Xi drive in by two roads and trap Zhao Yun in the middle of the encirclement. But Zhang Bao, sent by Zhuge Liang, breaks through the layers of encirclement and tells Zhao Yun that he met the Wei general Xue Ze blocking the way and killed him. Romance, Ch. 92 §16–17 · 19–20

Of the 120 chapters of the Romance he appears in only one, Chapter 92, and no chapter has his name in its title. He appears neither in Chen Shou's main text nor in Pei Songzhi's commentary. Romance, Ch. 92 §15

In the Romance

In Chapter 92 of the Romance, Cao Rui, ruler of Wei, sends the imperial son-in-law Xiahou Mao to gather the troops of the various routes of Guanzhong and resist Zhuge Liang. Han De, the great general of Xiliang whom Xiahou Mao has made his vanguard, loses all four of his sons at Mount Fengming, and charging at Zhao Yun to avenge them, is run through by his spear and killed before they have fought three bouts. The Wei army suffers another defeat, falls back more than 10 li and pitches camp. Romance, Ch. 92 §1 · 4 · 8 · 13

When Xiahou Mao confers with his generals through the night and says that no one can match Zhao Yun, the Army Adviser Cheng Wu, son of Cheng Yu, judges that Zhao Yun has courage but no strategy. He proposes setting two bodies of troops in ambush on either side; Xiahou Mao is to fall back first when battle is joined and lure Zhao Yun to where the ambush lies, then climb a hill and direct the troops on all sides to surround him layer upon layer. Xiahou Mao follows his advice, having Dong Xi lie in ambush on the left with 30,000 troops and Xue Ze on the right with 30,000 troops. Romance, Ch. 92 §13–15

The next day, the Wei general Pan Sui flees before three bouts are fought and the eight Wei generals flee one after another, and Zhao Yun, riding his advantage, pursues them deep into enemy ground. As Deng Zhi hastily gathers his troops and pulls back, Dong Xi from the left and Xue Ze from the right drive their troops in by two roads, and Deng Zhi, with few troops, cannot rescue Zhao Yun. With only a thousand or so men under him, Zhao Yun charges east and strikes west in the middle of the encirclement, but Xiahou Mao on the hill points to wherever Zhao Yun goes and directs the three armies, so he cannot break out. Having fought from the hour of chen to the hour of you, Zhao Yun, as night falls and crossbow bolts pour in from all sides, sighs, 'I would not admit that I was old, and now I am to die here.' Romance, Ch. 92 §16–19

Just then a band of troops charges in from the northeast corner, led by Zhang Bao with a man's head hanging below his horse's neck. Zhang Bao says that on the Chancellor's orders he has led 5,000 troops and broken through the layers of encirclement, and that the Wei general Xue Ze happened to be blocking the way, so he killed him. Guan Xing, who rides in next, says he has cut down the Wei general Dong Xi, and that night the troops of the three roads attack together and crush the Wei army. Xue Ze does not appear in the Romance after this. Romance, Ch. 92 §19–22
